The Pragmatic Programmer is one of those rare tech audiobooks you’ll listen, re-listen, and listen to again over the years. Whether you’re new to the field or an experienced practitioner, you’ll come away with fresh insights each and every time.

Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt wrote the first edition of this influential book in 1999 to help their clients create better software and rediscover the joy of coding. These lessons have helped a generation of programmers examine the very essence of software development, independent of any particular language, framework, or methodology, and the Pragmatic philosophy has spawned hundreds of books, screencasts, and audio books, as well as thousands of careers and success stories.

Now, 20 years later, this new edition re-examines what it means to be a modern programmer. Topics range from personal responsibility and career development to architectural techniques for keeping your code flexible and easy to adapt and reuse. All the old favorite topics are there, updated for this new world. And there's a bunch of new content, reflecting what we've learned in the intervening years.

Whether you’re a new coder, an experienced programmer, or a manager responsible for software projects, use these lessons daily, and you’ll quickly see improvements in personal productivity, accuracy, and job satisfaction. You’ll learn skills and develop habits and attitudes that form the foundation for long-term success in your career. You’ll become a pragmatic programmer.

This audiobook is organized as a series of sections, each containing a series of topics. It is read by Anna Katarina; Dave and Andy (and a few other folks) jump in every now and then to give their take on things.

Being a team leader for a few years, I was searching for a comprehensive knowledge on helping my team and myself also to become better at what we do. This book brings the authors 20 years experience in practical and applicable manner. Thank you for the time you took writing this book.

Exceptional book

It is just great, it puts into words many thoughts (some of which) I've felt, but completely unstructured.

Highly ecommended to all programmers.

Best book on programming I've read!

Incredible book with the ability to make the programmatic and dull into common sense and enjoyable. One of the best book performances I’ve ever heard on any book, mixed with a real sense of purpose and love. Really amazing book.

One of the best books period

This audiobook contains an incredible amount of items, points and techniques that any developer can implement to became a better professional.

It was very fun to listen to it, and I recommend taking notes about what made you curious, and about what you can still implement in your journey to evolve as a software engineer.

This been said, I felt that sometimes it only cover the surface of important topics, it lacks some further explanation about some “why’s”. That is another reason why I suggest taking notes: to do further research.

Depending on your experience, some of this topics will become a little trivial, because it talks about things that you might already be doing for many years and that are automatic to you. On the other hand, I do not feel comfortable recommending this book to someone that is just starting (less than 2-3 years of experience as a programmer), as it might be an overwhelming amount of knowledge and steps needed to be put in place to consider yourself a great professional.

This book is one of those to listen again once every year, to make sure your “great developer’s habit checklist” is in place. It is really impressive and the authors put a lot of heart into it. It made me think (and rethink) about many techniques that I did not put the due importance, and I am most sure I can reinforce better habits for me and my teammates.

A comprehensive checklist for better development
