In the cattle drives of the Old West, pumpkin rollers were green farmboys, almost more trouble than they were worth. When Trey McLean leaves his family's East Texas cotton farm and sets off on his own to learn the cattleman's trade, he's about as green as they come. But Trey learns fast. He learns about deceit when a con man cheats him out of his grubstake and about love when he meets the woman he's destined to marry.

And when luck finally sets him on a cattle drive to Kansas, Trey learns the trade from veteran drover Ivan Kerbow, but he also learns the code of violence and death from outlaw Jarrett Longacre, a man who will plague his life at every turn.

Performed by Dylan Lynch, Matthew Keenan, Nora Achrati, Elizabeth Jernigan, Danny Gavigan, Terence Aselford, David Coyne, Andy Clemence, Ken Jackson, Michael John Casey, Scott McCormick, David Jourdan, Richard Rohan, Colleen Delany, Tim Getman, Eric Messner, Mort Shelby, Bradley Smith, Nanette Savard.

Over past few months I completed ALL series of Kelton books, all Standalone but 1.

I love these books, not a bad one in the pack. However there are only a handful long enough to be considered a proper length book. They are all way too short, not letting characters or situations evolve.

An exemption would be The Far Canyon.

Elmer Kelton's body of work is extensive but would be more effective if 3 booksxwere combined 1 proper length book.

I don't have any complaints other than inflated price. Quite valuable to open the listener to a world long gone yet incredibly poignant to current societal issues.

Too short for price of credit
