“Nobody tells you that reading Hunter S. Thompson novels as a young adult male while serving in the military is a potentially very bad idea. Some things you simply must absorb and learn on your own.” —Sturgill Simpson

Made into a major motion picture starring Johnny Depp, The Rum Diary—a national bestseller and New York Times Notable Book—is Hunter S. Thompson’s brilliant love story of jealousy, treachery, and violent lust in the Caribbean.

Begun in 1959 by a twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery, and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. The narrator, freelance journalist Paul Kemp, irresistibly drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman, is soon thrust into a world where corruption and get-rich-quick schemes rule, and anything (including murder) is permissible. Exuberant and mad, youthful and energetic, this dazzling comedic romp provides a fictional excursion as riveting and outrageous as Thompson’s Fear and Loathing books.

Thompson's analogies are just flawless and flow effortlessly. Brilliant writer.

Easily my favorite audiobook. I only wish it wasn't abridged, because it's a great story. Campbell Scott also has a great voice and nails the voices and accents. I'll look for more of his narrations.

Fantastic story, wonderfully narrated.

I read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, became a devotee of Hunter S. Thompson, really enjoyed it but the pages came to life in The Rum Diary, while listening to it on Audible. The characters are engaging and Mr. Scott did an excellent job reading this novel. Enjoyed this audiobook more than any other I have listened to.

The narrator was great, he has a mellow voice that doesn't get old. I listened to this entire book without stopping. In addition, this book is awesome. Its raw HST, but with an unexpected explosion of intense hints of romance. My wife reads me excerpts from her romance novels all the time, and I thought the romance in this novel was as good if not better than any of them. Makes me wish he would have written more novels like this one. Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who jokes about his wife's romance novels and likes the traditional, raw HST. I think this book further reinforces the fact that HST was one of the greatest writers of our time.

Great Narration and Great Book!
