An aristocratic lady is accused of murder in a historical romance by this best-selling author.

The upper class of the social circle regarded Sir Benjamin Wright with utmost honor and respect. Yet Lady Emma knew her husband was in fact a drunken, jealous brute who delighted in humiliating her both in and out of the bedroom.

His murder had been a blessing, she thought, until the constable's accusing finger pointed to her. But it soon became apparent that her late husband hid secrets - and enemies.

When the practical Comte Saint-Juste arrived on the scene, offering his services, Lady Emma was about to discover what the French dedication to l'amour really meant.

The narrator confused a French accent with that from India. The other accents were prime. The story amusing and suspenseful.

Wonderful Chesney

The story was decent, amusing, and some suspense-not expecting high literature. But the MMC voice sounded completely feminine and unappealing. Catastrophically off-putting. The other voices were fine though the FMC sounds a bit whiny. The hero is a mood-kill.

Male main character voice really off-putting

Sadly this book has two almost fatal flaws: a heroine you just want to slap for behaving so stupidly and a narrator who always makes the heroines sound strident, stupid and silly. Voice differentiation is terrible. Difficult to tell between men and women too much of the time. All voices are harsh. It's unfortunate these early audio versions of Beaton's books had to use such terrible performers.

It might be worth the producers to re-record these books with some of the terrific narrators available today. I know I would be willing to purchase the new versions and delete these old ones. Beaton's books, especially the regency romances are worth listening to time and again. I already do to some extent, when I don't have to listen with gritted teeth as I have to do with Lindy Nettleton and Charlotte Ann Dore.

Somewhat Fun story, but lousy narrator

I don't think it's believable that an abused woman who has plenty of money would immediately surrender her freedom and body to marriage. the plot also just wasn't enjoyable. and the title didn't make sense.

didn't enjoy the plot
