A second chance...

In the windswept sands of the Middle East, Paul Chardy fought side by side with Ulu Beg: one, a charismatic, high-strung CIA covert warrior, the other a ferocious freedom fighter. Then Chardy fell into the hands of the enemy, and Beg was betrayed. Now the two men are about to meet again.

A second gun...

Beg has come over the Mexican border under a hail of bullets - determined to assassinate a leading American political figure and avenge his people's betrayal. The CIA wants Chardy to stop the hit. Chardy wants to save Beg's life.

Between the two men is a tragic past, a failed mission, and a woman who knew them in war - and who knows their secrets now. Around both men is a conspiracy of lies and violence that reaches back to the Cold War. But as Beg moves in for his kill and as Chardy breaks loose from his handlers, a terrible truth begins to emerge: somewhere, someone wants both men to die.

Interesting historical background. Clever and twisting plot. Introspective meandering of key characters way overdone for my taste.

As always, Stephen Hunter doesn’t disappoint. Great story telling with an action packed finish. The narrator could’ve been a bit better. I had a hard time distinguishing between characters.

Great Story, Narration could’ve been better

Even though "The Second Saladin" was only Hunter's second book it showed great promise of things to come. Even though the descriptions of weapons and shooting techniques were no where as developed as they would become in his Bob Lee Swagger novels they were still there. I found the story line good but convoluted. I didn't like the constant changing between first and last names when he referred to his characters. It was confusing. All in all it was a pretty good story, although a bit slow at first. The story's narrator,Dick Hill, did a great job.

Work was well read. Dick Hill is a great talent. I'm surprised that the bus ride geography wasn't researched. Tennessee and Missouri border Arkansas to the east.

It was tough to follow in places because of all the names but when I stuck with it, everything fell into place and any confusion I had was resolved. The story is subtle but so rich with vibrant details. It’s old school espionage. Loved every minute of it and might listen again sometime. Dick Hill was amazing as always.
