When cowboy artist Willie Russell is murdered on the Branding Iron Ranch, Sheriff Charles Matthews faces a mystery that seems built on the bones of the past. Willie Russell leaves behind sketches that illustrate a century-old legend of a brutal outlaw, a beautiful young woman, and the lost Santiago Crucifix, a three-foot-tall cross of solid gold.

With only the sketches, the footprints of Johnny Brentwood, and very little else, Charles focuses on the eerie links between past and present events. Were Willie's sketches the story of the past, or a portent of the future?

This is another good story about sheriff Charles Matthews. Charles is trying to solve a murder. A cowboy that worked on the Branding Iron ranch has been found dead. He was liked by everyone and he was also an artist. He had drawn a picture of a gold crucifix. Sheriff Charles found the picture and knew he had to of seen it to have been able to draw it. No one has ever been able to find it. I like the way the sheriff and his deputies work together. I like the way they biker back and forth. There is some good characters in this story. This is a good mystery with a western feel to it. Ben McLean does a good job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you.

Story centers on romance and slows down the pace of the book. Lots of pain and suffering, but not much continuity of plot. A real disappointment after reading the first book in the series. Too many misunderstandings as characters make false assumptions about the motives of others. Hope the next book will return to centering on the mystery rather than sophomoric romance.

More romance than mystery
