Valeria is in love with her best friend, Greg, and has been for years. But they can’t be together because, after they graduate high school, they’ll be on opposite sides of the country. This seems to be Valeria’s greatest dilemma...until a freak storm ambushes the two on a hike a few miles outside their town.

During the storm, Greg is injured, and a strange shield falls from the sky and knocks Valeria unconscious. When she wakes up, her whole world is turned upside down. Greg is missing, her town has been annihilated, deadly creatures roam, and the disembodied voice of a woman she knows nothing of talks to her from inside her own head.

The woman says Greg has been taken but that Valeria can save him and survive the perils awaiting her if she harnesses the “gifts” she was given at birth and if she uses the shield that fell from the sky. But how can Valeria trust a woman she’s never met?

She'll have to rely on herself and face horrors she could never have imagined to save her best friend. And, in the process, discover her true identity.

On Valeria’s quest to find her lost best friend/lover Greg, she found her mother Nike, the Greek Goddess. She was given the Shield of Nike, a dagger and a torch to help her through her journey to kill the Mother of Monsters and other Gods living within zombies. Valeria had many amazing abilities of strength and speed being a Demi-God! Many threatened and taunted her through her terrifying mission. The Narrator was very captivating while she portrayed the characters of the story very well. I was confused in some of the story because it seemed historical but also very modern with cars, arrows, Pegasus and Gods but it made the story unique and original. I love a good fantasy read. Overall, the story was short and entertaining. It was a beautiful and imaginative read. I was easily absorbed into the storyline and I can not wait to read/listen to more. I definitely recommend this book.

• As a fan of Greek mythology & Rick Riordan's works, I jumped on the opportunity to read another story about the infamous Greek gods. I didn't know what to expect from this novella, as I've never read any of Gordon's other tales. Honestly, The Shield of Nike was so enthralling, I needn't have done so either! In fact, this short prequel only made me crave more! Each paragraph is delicately cultured and so coated with word-ambrosia, listening was like music to my ears.
• Mobley also did an amazing job narrating. It was like she were the author, herself, and knew what diction and emotion needed to be used with each character. Although I was a bit disappointed she didn't reach for a deeper register when voicing the male cast, I could listen to a silky smooth voice like hers all day.
• I'm definitely one of the many who are used to the gods being the good guys or just morally ambivalent. For them to actually be the antagonists took me by great shock and surprise. This detail actually fueled my desire to listen to more! Guess who has to start binge reading now? I'll give a hint (it's this girl).

I never wanted to give a bad review, but this story felt like it was a high schooler's essay. Then again, it is a story of a high schooler. At the start, everything was extremely dramatic. The author needs to rethink the time frame of the action scenes. In the midst of a fight, with split second reactions, the heroine can not possibly spend 2 minutes thinking of something or someone, while making split second life preserving decisions. I am sure there will be some fans of this book, but unfortunately it was just okay for me.

Just okay

The story is nice but the way it is told is captivating. I love this narrator but can’t find her anywhere else. Very soothing, have listened to it twice.

Excellent Narrator

This is a good little novella. I’m always looking for some Greek mythology and this fit it perfectly.
