This classic Machen Tale which was the main inspiration for the Serpent Men of Valusia in Robert E, Howard's tales of King Kull (and some of his Lovecraftian Horror stories as well) receives a surprisingly good reading by Mr. Herriot. Either he's getting better as he goes on. or the recording was edited better, or he just really liked the story, or a combination of all three but in this performance the accent is softened, the feel of the narrator's being actually involved with the events he is relating are, by turns, both fascinating and occasionally even heighten the sense of the outré and horrifying that Mr. Machen knew so well how to evoke. Let's call it 4 and a half stars out of five!

Fine Rendition of a Classic Tale of Terror!

Great narrator, dull story. Aside from the few wonderfully evocative landscape descriptions & the climactic ritual, this is a boring & overly plotted story. Every development is practically telegraphed in flashing text, but the last ten minutes is still inexplicably dedicated to recapping the affair. Machen was a huge influence on Lovecraft, but all Lovecraft was able to take from was his racism & academic fetishism. There certainly aren't any chills or narrative ambition to be found in The White Pyramid.
