Senior Detective Kate Wakeland senses dark undercurrents in her beloved small town, Tallman's Valley.

She's glimpsed a silent town lying beneath the valley " a place where the streets and landscapes are the same, but where daylight never reaches. But as Kate begins to investigate the silent town, a shocking multiple shooting occurs on the mountain that bookends the valley, Witness Mountain.

Kate is forced to suspend all else and focus on the case at hand. How did a frail, elderly man manage to shoot his family? Did he have the help of his grandson, a teenage boy who can't account for his whereabouts that morning?

The height of a devastating fire season hinders Kate at every turn. Through the smoky veil hanging in the valley, Kate begins to suspect a connection between the Witness Mountain shootings and the silent town.

But the dangers are far greater than Kate ever imagined. There are people who will kill to conceal what they know and what they've done.

I’ve listened to so many books over the years , some extraordinary. But am becoming more picky because I can’t be bothered wasting my time with authors who just copy ideas and don’t get creative, crafting something really special.
I had read Anni’s first two books in this series and found them interesting with great character development.
I really enjoyed this book. There was good suspense, Interesting characters and the storyline was really interesting, kept me engaged throughout.
I’ve read a few reviews critical of Caroline Lee’s narration particularly in relation to American accents. Whilst she may not be as polished as some in some of these accents, I find her general narration so relaxing and easy to listen to, and sometimes search for books she narrates purely because I love her voice. So I can readily overlook her sometimes cringy US accents because they don’t dominate and don’t ruin the story for me. I’m glad I picked this book.

I’m becoming a jaded reader, but this book rejuvenated my interest

Anni Taylor is definitely a great story teller but be warned there are so many different characters it’s easy to find yourself getting confused keeping up with them all. The story seems somewhat all over the place which is a little frustrating but it’s all tied together in the end. Her books aren’t predictable and that’s what I love the most you’ll never figure out who actually did what. All in all it was worth the credit. This is book #3 so start with book 1.

I really liked it! I live long audiobooks. Richly layered characters, which started in book one. Mostly believable.

I hope it’s not the last in the series
