Could We Be Witnessing a Return of Belief in Our Generation?

Justin Brierley is convinced that in our time we are witnessing a growing wave of faith.

Famously described as the “long, withdrawing roar” of the “Sea of Faith,” the Christian narrative that shaped the West has been replaced by sweeping secularism. But is that the end of the story?

It was a conversation with agnostic journalist Douglas Murray that led Brierley to investigate whether a change was on the horizon. Speaking of the “Sea of Faith,” Murray remarked that tides come back in again and that a number of his intelligent friends had converted to Christianity in recent years. Brierley was seeing a similar trend among the secular thinkers he had interviewed. Jordan Peterson, Tom Holland, Dave Rubin, and many others have found themselves surprised by the continuing resonance and relevance of Christianity, and they are joining in on conversations about faith.

Listeners will encounter Brierley’s discussion of cultural trends and concepts including:

  • The meaning crisis
  • Public intellectuals embracing faith
  • Why the Christianity story is ready to return

And much more

In The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God, Brierley outlines the dramatic fall of New Atheism and the birth of a new conversation on whether God makes sense of science, history, culture, and the search for meaning. People are returning to Christianity―but is the church prepared to welcome a new wave of faith?

Things have changed radically over the last two decades of my adult life. Justin has had a front row seat to these shifting cultural tides. This unique perspective makes him an important prophetic voice. This book is humbly written and accessible - like everything Justin does.

Great story from someone with a front row seat

In a day when it's so easy to be cynical about the devolution of our culture into narcissism, relativism, and the will to power, this book is refreshing! It put me under conviction about my own negativity. The book is a tour de Force describing scientific and philosophical arguments that increasingly support the idea that belief in God is not and should not be ruled out. This is accomplished in part by showing the unlikeliness that there is no God from a scientific point of view and the unlivability from a philosophical point of view of living as if there were no God. There is no claim of course to prove God's existence but merely a reminder that if the tide of belief had once been retreating, as described in Matthew Arnold's poem The Dover Beach, then perhaps we should be mindful that tides can come back in. The book is thoughtful not argumentative or polemical. For any intellectually honest person who has dismissed belief in God as old-fashioned, or intellectually dishonest this book will surely give them pause.

Very Encouraging!

This author has been at the forefront of culture and Christianity for decades. This book is a welcome addition to a growing library, coming from new apologists, who have an eye not only on philosophy and logic, but on the broader culture too. I love this book and cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a must read for anyone, who wants to be encouraged and believes that a better day for the church is coming. Thank you, Justin, for writing this book for us. It belongs on every believers shelf and device.
