USA TODAY BESTSELLER • A wandering fortune teller finds an unexpected family in this cozy fantasy debut, hailed as “perfection…a beautiful treasure of a book that will warm your heart and heal your soul.”—Sarah Beth Durst, Author of The Spellshop

“The warmest, loveliest book I’ve read in ages.”—Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Tao is an immigrant fortune teller, traveling between villages with just her trusty mule for company. She only tells "small" fortunes: whether it will hail next week; which boy the barmaid will kiss; when the cow will calve. She knows from bitter experience that big fortunes come with big consequences…

Even if it’s a lonely life, it’s better than the one she left behind. But a small fortune unexpectedly becomes something more when a (semi) reformed thief and an ex-mercenary recruit her into their desperate search for a lost child. Soon, they’re joined by a baker with a "knead" for adventure, and—of course—a slightly magical cat.

Tao starts down a new path with companions as big-hearted as her fortunes are small. But as she lowers her walls, the shadows of her past close in—and she’ll have to decide whether to risk everything to preserve the family she never thought she could have.

Editorial Review

Signs point to cozy, delightful listening
I’m fully on board with the low-stakes fantasy moment we’re having right now, and so hitting play on this debut was a no-brainer for me. Following Tao, a fortune-teller who specializes in foretelling the mundane, Julie Leong spins a yarn about identity and chosen family. Narrator Phyllis Ho is new to me, and she positively sparkled in this story; her voice is at once buoyant, exuberant, and gentle—so fitting for a cozy fantasy. I challenge you not to grin while listening. — Sam D., Audible Editor

This book was phenomenaly cozy! It took me some time to finish, but once I picked it up again I could not put it back down. Tao and her journey of self discovery, living how she wants, and coping with her past and confronting her future was truly amazing. Kina and Mash and Silt are definetley great friends that will do anything for Tao and each other. Fidelitus and Laohu also add such a funny comic relief to the story as well. Each character comes to terms with who they are and who they want to be while banding together. We need more found family stories and with perspectives of diverse characters like Julie Leong has in this wonderful story. The narrator did a great job, her voice wasn't really for me, but it was nice to fully immerse myself into the story.

Such a Feel Good Story

Decent book. The characters get a very random quest in the middle of the book that adds nothing. The narrator does a good job, however, I dislike their voice choice for one of the male characters.
