Return to the Invisible Library for Irene's most perilous mission yet! The Untold Story is the climactic eighth book in Genevieve Cogman's exhilarating series.

For librarian-spy Irene, this could be her last mission. She has been sent on a terrifying, dangerous task – one which must be kept secret at all costs. To eliminate Alberich.

But even more troubling news emerges. Entire worlds are disappearing, and the Library itself may have something to do with it.

To uncover the truth of these vanishing worlds, Irene and her friends must descend into the unplumbed depths of the Library. What they find will change everything . . .

The Untold Story is the unputdownable eighth book in the Invisible Library series of fantasy novels by Genevieve Cogman.

Genevieve is also the author of Scarlet, a Sunday Times bestselling novel. Set during the French revolution, it is a spellbinding tale of magic, vampires and chaos, written with her trademark wit and pace.

Critic reviews

I absolutely loved this . . . flavoured with truly unique mythology and a dash of the eldritch. Such clever, creepy, elaborate world-building and snarky, sexy-smart characters! (N. K. Jemisin on The Invisible Library)
Irene is a great heroine: fiery, resourceful and no one’s fool, she has a wonderfully droll sense of humour – much like the novel itself (Guardian on The Masked City)
Brilliant and so much fun. Skullduggery, Librarians and dragons – Cogman keeps upping the ante on this delightful series! (Charles Stross on The Burning Page)
A fantastic addition to Genevieve Cogman’s oeuvre, and paves the way for a deeper exploration of the fantastic world that she has created. (Fantasy Book Review on The Lost Plot)
Cogman fills a captivating story with animated characters and propels the narrative at a cracking pace, planting perfectly timed plot twists and reversals of fortune along the way (Guardian on The Mortal Word)
Simply a joy to read - deeply atmospheric where it should be, properly exciting when anything’s going on as it generally is, and tender too. This is a series that shows absolutely no sign of losing pace, and I'm already impatient for the next (Blue Book Balloon on The Secret Chapter)
Without sacrificing the adventure that is a hallmark of the series, Cogman pulls Irene through a multi-level maze of doubts and paranoia that will have readers jumping at shadows, too. Fans will be delighted to find this series still going strong (Publishers Weekly on The Dark Archive)

I love this series! What a wonderful storyteller. The personality given to each character feels like real people that are old friends. Each new book tells a chapter of their lives.

Another book I couldn’t put down

Over the year that it took me to digest the entire literary series I found myself fully engaged and immersed in the world(s) of lead characters Irene, Kai, and Vale. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery and a touch of fantasy. It’s not as fantastical as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings in it’s fantasy narrative but it does dip far enough into that realm to stand uniquely on its own and secure its spot within the genre. What I truly loved about this book is that while romance was involved it did not tarnish the protagonists character or values. She consistently acted in line with what her character profile was set to from the beginning. I was surprised and vaguely uncomfortable with the deeper dive into the romance portion of the story in the final book. I am grateful that it was brief. I would have loved a stronger ending with a more meaningful backstory to the greatest protagonists of the series, but other reviews have me guessing that perhaps I missed something along the way. However, this minor gap in my satisfaction leads me to give this book and series a 4 out of 5 stars. Well written, keenly intricate but not too detailed as to lose the readers interest, and refreshing in the narrative as a whole. Would and will absolutely recommend to others.

Intrigue, sabotage, conspiracy, mystery.
