A haunting reminder of the silent trauma our service men and women carry long after returning home.

This book was beautifully written showcasing the struggles of trauma, PTSD and the strength needed for recovery.

🎙As always, Joe Arden gives a stellar performance pouring his heart and soul into Cal. The stress, anxiety, fear and guilt that Cal felt at times was felt through Joe's performance. CJ Bloom was amazing with her calm, steady support that Cal so desperately needed. Although a heavy topic, in the end it is always hope and love that is the greatest gift.

I had to wipe my tears. I had to sit there, staring at nothing, trying to gather my scattered pieces before I could even think about writing this review. Because this story does not knock politely. It punches you straight in the gut and then stands there while you try to breathe.

There is no way this book wasn’t born from real memories. It feels too raw. Too detailed. Too painfully specific. The way Cal’s flashbacks ambush him. The way ordinary sounds turn into landmines. The way his days becomes a battlefield of its own. The triggers. The tormented replays. The daily war that continues long after the uniform comes off.

The ugliness of war is not romanticized here. It is stripped bare. You see the dust. You hear the chaos. You feel the weight of every name etched into stone. The details of the fallen. The fragments of their lives. The moments that ended them. It’s written with such brutal honesty that it feels like someone trusted us with something sacred and heavy.

Joe Arden did not just narrate this. He embodied it. The vulnerability in his voice. The subtle tremble when Cal relives a memory. The way his voice tightens during the flashbacks. And that sharp breathing. That jagged inhale during the retellings. It’s not written on the page. It’s not described as a sound effect. But the emotions are so strong, the writing so vivid, that he brought it to life. He added that layer. That sting. That realism.
When he recounts the deaths. When he carries each lost soul in his tone. You don’t just hear it. You feel it behind your ribs. It’s as if he was there, holding every memory with reverence.

And CJ Bloom. Perfection. Her calm, steady voice feels like sunlight breaking through after a storm. She guides him through the trauma. Through the darkness. She becomes that grounding presence not only for Cal, but for the listener. Her softness balances the rawness. Her strength is quiet but unshakable.

Out of my comfort zone and worth it!!

‘War’ stories are usually not on my radar. However, something drew me to this one when I read the blurb, so I took a chance on the audio. Best. Decision. Ever!

This is the story of Cal Bishop, a veteran with war wounds that go beyond skin deep. He’s struggling with PTSD and just navigating day-to-day life. His neighbor, Ana, is there silently supporting him without pushing.

Let me just jump into the narration. Duet narration by Joe Arden and CJ Bloom and they were exceptional. This is told in a single POV and Joe carries the bulk of the material. His performance is raw, emotional, and gut wrenching at times. His audible gasp coming in and out flashbacks felt like catching my own breath. On page, Ana’s role seems like a supporting one. However, CJ played her masterfully. She is so much more than a supporting role. CJ delivered Ana’s quiet strength as she was the calming force in Cal’s world. She was a woman of little words, but they were powerful in their impact. This is definitely a book that needs to be experienced in audio. Joe and CJ delivered performances that truly brought these characters and experiences to life.

Did I mention this is the author’s debut? Incredible. There is something fluid and brilliant about the way this is written. Someone referred to it as poetic and I couldn’t agree more. There’s a love story based on friendship and healing. It’s a beautifully written story of hope and finding that person to anchor you and become your safe place.

Keep the day in a shape the mind can stand.....

Can you imagine having to use your senses all at once, all the time just to survive the day? This is what this book elicits. Wolff has done an amazing and immersive job at bringing the reader/listener in to the experience. The journey of Cal to find peace is an ongoing one and Ana is perfection in doing this. And then the narration......sigh. This book is narrated with perfection. Joe and CJ's talents are on full display....I think I cheered with every little victory, inhaled sharply with every breath transition, and amazed by the stability of simplicity. This is not a spice book... this is an emotional journey for both the characters and the reader. This is a true representation of healing and trying to, but also brings to light the struggle of Veterans. A reminder that we need to do better with support.

This book though is special. The writing carries a quiet heaviness. It’s lyrical without being flowery, powerful without being loud. The author’s writing is emotionally intelligent and intentional. The pacing mirrors the instability of memory. This audiobook was hands down one of the best things I’ve read. It will live rent free in my head and heart forever. It dives into the cost of survival and that sometimes it’s what no one else can see. Joe Arden’s performance is outstanding. The way his voice shifts during the flashbacks tightening, roughening, sometimes barely holding steady makes you feel like you’re inside his head when the memories take over. It isn’t dramatic. It’s real. Raw. You can hear the restraint, the exhaustion, the fight to stay grounded.
And CJ Bloom brings such quiet strength to her role. She doesn’t play the “fix him” heroine. She listens. She learns his triggers. She carries the weight with him instead of trying to erase it. Her tone is steady, compassionate, and deeply human, the kind of love that doesn’t demand healing on a timeline.
This story is one that will make a lasting impression on your heart.
