A picture is worth a thousand words … but the photograph art historian Vicky Bliss has just received in the mail gives rise to a thousand questions instead. At first glance it appears to be the famous portrait of Frau Schliemann adorned in the gold of Troy. But closer study reveals the picture to be contemporary—which is odd since Vicky knows the Trojan gold vanished sometime around the end of World War Two. And if she needed further proof that something here is terribly amiss, a quick look at the blood-stained envelope the photo arrived in should do the trick.
Yet Vicky is not the only expert to receive this mysterious mailing. And the entire circle is gathering for a festive Bavarian Christmas—one, hopefully, to be made even more festive by the rediscovery of an ancient lost treasure. But the celebration could prove to be short—and bloody—courtesy of a very determined killer in their midst …

Vicky Bliss is a great character. Smart, warm-hearted, clever, pragmatic as well as a romantic. And tall! To many female characters are petite. Being a tall woman, I appreciate Vicky. Her love affair with Sir John Smythe develops further and they are so good together. Peters manages to convey their passion and affection for each other without going into a lot of details. I’m a little in love with him myself. Great dialogue, beautiful locations, and fun mystery.
Peters and Rosenblat. Magic together!

Professor Schmidt - someone I would like to know in real life. What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?
She has the wonderful ability with her voice to keep the characters straight in the listener's mind even if she doesn't say who is speaking. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YesAny additional comments?
I have listened to alot of Elizabeth Peters books, especially the Amelia Peabody Emerson series. A couple of Peters' books in the Vickie Bliss series are read by another narrator and just don't "cut the mustard"! Too bad - I've missed out on Vickie's adventures!Peters & Rosenblat - winners!
