When a wealthy woman comes to her untimely demise, Lord Peter Wimsey dives into the case—despite his lack of evidence or suspects. Just as Wimsey is getting familiar with the case, the woman's maid becomes the next victim. With two victims and no suspects, Wimsey is at his wit's end trying to prevent the next murder from happening. As senseless crime brings a dark shadow over this beautiful Hampshire village, will Wimsey be able to solve this case in time?

This book is a little different compared to the first two in that you are pretty sure who the murder is for the entire book but it is just a question of how they did it and if Peter can figure out a way to prove it. I did feel there was more racism and religious prejudice in this book compared to the previous two. I'm not sure if that was the author showing how predetermined biases can slow down an investigation or just a product of the times for when it was written. The method of murder was also a little unsatisfying so that is why it lost a star overall.

A solid installment in the Wimsey series, with Sayers classic incisive humor, social commentary, and skill. Mark Meadows does a wonderful job, giving life and clear personality to all the characters. His Wimsey is a delight. I’m so disappointed that the whole series read by Meadows isn’t recorded and available.

More Wimsey + Meadows please

reader (mark meadows) makes this book! the story is good, though fairly predictable as so many murder mysteries have been done since the time of writing this, so it is no longer new...but the characters are great, and Mark Medows so captures the characters that it came to life. I usually think a good reader tells the story and does not distract from it...but there are very few where the reader adds so much life and character that the book is made by the reader. this is one of these. I'm devastated that he does not record any later books in the series...it's like a movie that has changed actors and I'm not sure I want to go on!

amazing reader brought the characters to life

I hadn’t read Dorothy Sayers in many years and had forgotten how very impolitic the stories are to both women and POC. Some of the dialog is cringeworthy.

Great detective story, but….

So many racist people, not any of the main characters, in fact the opposite, but it was treated as normal. However, for the time it was written, this was progressive and sensitive to the subject.

Clever plot and developed, interesting characters.
