Printz Honor Book, 2018

The deep and enduring friendship between Vincent and Theo Van Gogh defined both brothers' lives. As a confidant, champion, sympathizer, and friend, Theo financially and emotionally supported his older brother as the artistic but troubled Vincent struggled to find his path in life as both a painter and a man. Throughout that struggle, the brothers shared everything - swapping stories of lovers and friends, successes and disappointments, dreams and ambitions. Drawing on the 658 letters Vincent wrote to Theo during his lifetime, Deborah Heiligman weaves a meticulously researched tale of those two intertwined lives and the extraordinary love that fueled them.

Amazing approach to an artist’s biography that brings to life not only the artist but also the private and personal relationships that permitted his talent to come roaring forth to the world. I was moved. I was awed. I wish that kind of love for all of mankind

Incredibly informative based on actual letters from the Brothers. Felt as if I we’re watching/listening to a Play. Very well done.

Well Read!

This isn’t the story you heard in middle school art class. Vincent did experience recognition during his lifetime and worked alongside contemporary artists whose names are distinguished themselves.

That said I won’t lie, it’s a long schlogg to get through the whole book. It’s also a beautiful story of brotherhood and how far the commitment to one’s family can be pushed, The author did a good job weaving the letters and other research together to give context and a fuller picture of their relationship and their lives at the time.

I recommend it IF you’re patient and intrigued by Vincent’s story or sociology or similar.

Long, worth the time
