From the author of The Secret Knowledge of Water and Atlas of a Lost World comes a deeply felt essay collection focusing upon a vivid series of desert icons - a sheet of virga over Monument Valley, white seashells in dry desert sand, boulders impossibly balanced. Craig Childs delves into the primacy of the land and the profound nature of the more-than-human.

Of course the writing was excellent Craig Childs writing. I've listened to almost all of his books, and I like, moan at certain parts as if I've taken a particularly good bite of food. But this is the first one that the author himself didn't narrate, and I didn't love the new guy. I would literally buy another copy of this audiobook with the author reading it if it came out.

Perfection as Always, Though I Missed the Author's Narration

Wonderful collection of linked essays on life and death in the desert regions of North America. Childs raises a bar set by Kingsolver and others writing about dryland ecology.

Yet again I loved Craig Childs writing. As a lover of the desert and a geologist, I really love how he captures the thoughts and feelings of these types of landscapes.

Favorite quote “Geology is the hand of God” I have to say I agree!

Nice visit to the desert

Virga, an earnest attempt for water seeking to replenish the ground is breathed away from existence, only to recycle endlessly.

Great, short listen!

Craig Childs is a writer and oral interpreter of his work in very exclusive neighborhood of master language artists.
if you want writing that let's you be, 'in the moment,' of living in the mind of a genius observer their are few writers that are his equal. This book was brilliantly expressed but the quan of perfection is when Craig is the one interpreting his own words.

a great collection of Craig's most recent writing
