What happens in this house follows a young girl Vivian Smith throughout her childhood. While dealing with problems at home, Vivian is forced to spend time with different family members and family friends.

Going from one place to another, she soon realizes, her family isn't the only one living with secrets and lies. It's not unusual for families to have secrets. Because secrets have no boundaries. The secrets we hide can have enormous power over our lives. Vivian discovers early on; the worst secrets are usually the ones within your family. You know, the bad things that happen in the basement or in the back bedroom. The physical altercation between brothers, sisters, or husbands and wives. Or being abused by someone you trusted.

When these events happen in your house, you're told it stays in this house. Vivian witnessed several horrible and unmentionable behaviors. As a child, she learned, you never talk about what happened in the house. The stories shared in the book would impact Vivian well into her adult years. You can choose to forget and move forward, or, your secrets can hold you captive forever. Vivian made a decision to free herself from all the secrets.

I enjoyed the different stories real life events. The description of San Francisco and how it impacted black Americans was awesome.
