A perfect prequel to the CAKE series!

What Lasts was such a touching and meaningful addition to the CAKE series. As a prequel, it gave so much depth to a story I already love. I’ve truly enjoyed following the McKallister family throughout all of Jill’s books, and this one made me appreciate them even more. Their witty family banter makes me want to be at their dinner tables for entertainment!

I’ve purchased both the eBooks and audiobooks for the entire series, and have thoroughly enjoyed all of the narrators throughout the series. The narrators for What Lasts brought such a clear image in my mind of Scott and Michelle. WOW! Victor Clarke sounded exactly how I would have imagined Scott, the surfer boy, to be and Michelle was portrayed by MK Blackwood, who was born in a wealthy family and was classically trained in etiquette.

This book gives us the story of Scott and Michelle McKallister, allowing us to see them as more than just the parents we’ve come to know. It adds emotional depth and offers another glimpse into the tragedy the family endures.

I also loved the nostalgic references to the 80s and 90s—it added a fun and heartfelt layer to the story. Overall, it was incredibly well written and such a great look into the past.

I highly recommend What Lasts—and even more so, the entire CAKE series. It’s a journey worth taking.

How well it lined up with the original stories

Michelle’s transition to Scott’s life was believable, not forced. I hope the author creates an epilogue that shows how Jake’s horrific experience affected all his siblings and how they managed to overcome their trauma.

Love these books!

I have been WAITING for this book to come out for so long! This series is everything!! I so loved to get to know the story of how Scott and Michelle got together!
The authors humor is spot on! I laughed I cried and felt the love they have for their children. The only bad thing is that I finished the book and don’t know what to do next!

Loved the new narrators

I've been dreaming of the day we got Michelle and Scotts story and its finally here.
Michelle has always been an icon in the back stories of the previous books!
Scott has always been one of my favorite side characters in her series and he did not disappoint.
was I the 80's girl who was constantly attracted to these guys? Yes, yes I was!
Having grown up in the 80's this story brought back so many memories and nostalgia for me.
It was a home run listen. I laughed and cried. I also loved revisiting all my McKallaster clan.
The new narrators did such an amazing job bring these characters to life. Highly recommend if you love to listen to audiobooks to give this one a go. You absolutely don't need to read the other books to love this, but since the other books are amazing, please add them as well.

A wonderful but bitter sweet ending to the series

JB has done it again. I can't understand how she's able to make each story in this series original funny and authentic. She is one of my favorite authors that doesn't write nearly enough books for me to read. I loved this story, and it made me want to read the other stories in the series all over again. I would imagine that this is the last book in the series because all of the other stories have been told with exception of Mitch, but I will truly miss this family. I can only hope now that the t v series that was in the works will come to fruition. By the way, the narrators in this and all of the stories in the series have been fantastic and truly believable.
