Wolf 359

The spaceship destroyed, his family murdered, Duncan finds himself stranded on a planet circling Wolf 359. The only other survivor is a beautiful gladiator named Alexis.

Together, they encounter a civilization whose past reaches back only 1500 years. Their fortune stumbles from the start when Alexis is immediately forced to fight the nation’s berserker, who underestimates his opponent and pays dearly for it. Yet, no sooner is she awarded his position, title, and wealth when she is called upon to lead the nation’s warriors in the first full-scale battle she has ever experienced, against an enemy who takes no prisoners.

With the very real possibility of Alexis never returning, Duncan is left alone to fend for himself. Calling himself a wizard of the universe, he is brought before the Council of Prelates to explain his obvious heresy. Deftly answering their questions, he throws caution to the wind and challenges the nation’s high priest, Vix, to a contest of divine favor. The one who calls down thunder and lightning from the sky is the chosen one of God and becomes the nation’s high priest. The loser dies.

Angry and nervous to be cornered into an arrangement that might reveal his own heresy, Vix quickly decides to preempt the contest by having Duncan murdered. Though he survived a destroyed spaceship, can Duncan now evade assassins? Can he really call down thunder and lightning?

I'm not even angry

okay I love sci-fi books and I expect a lot of them because you can create a lot in a fantasy world and this book didn't only disappoint me it was fantastic and yes it was over with and not very small cliffhanger but I don't care it was so very fantastic and well told that I enjoyed every single second of it

Masterfully done!

Starts off sci-fi ends fantasy, and Its all about the people! Ian Fisher does a great job with bringing out the emotions of all the characters, it's a great performance. Really looking forwards to the second book!

Great base for a series, ends on a cliff hanger

TLDR; It's a fun ride overall, there's some survival, and sci-fi, then into a fantasy setting, finishing up with political maneuvering. Given the number of genres this passes through I'm not sure what to compare it to, but if you like general Sci-Fi and Fantasy you won't complain about this one.

As a content warning, there is Sex (mild), Violence (Mild), some torture (minimal), religious debate (more as time goes on), and a priest with a thing for kids. None of this turned me off the book, but if you have personal issues with any of those this probably isn't for you.

Spoiler Free: You start out as a Sci-Fi, survival story. I really like this part, I was a bit concerned at the initial direction, and that we'd end up with an odd harem addition but the author deals with this content really well. Eventually, we make it to the planet and you have a fairly standard "Modern person, in Middle Ages" story going. There are some welcome twists that change this dynamic, as you get towards the end of the book.

That said the changes that happen are a small story problem. One of the main characters is supposed to have read a crazy amount, and should probably have had a general understanding of some of these twists. It's not story breaking, and it could be explained away, but it seems like something that would have come up quite quickly in his studying.

I'd say the section on political maneuvering is probably the weakest section of the book. It's the last section and provides the least "action" of the 3 sections. It's not a bad section, but it doesn't hold your attention quite as well.

Overall my only major complaint is the ending. It's a cliff hanger, like a multipart T.V. show. This is pet-peeve of mine, I understand why it's done, but if I get to the end of a 20-hour book and I'm not hooked a cliff-hanger isn't going to get me to come back. Fortunately, I genuinely enjoyed the book, so it's a bit of a wash.

The narration, at first I was a bit put off at first, the narration of some of the voices probably matched what the author wanted, but they were obnoxious. They were described as nasally, and they definitely were. After those characters went away I enjoyed the narration overall.

Not what I expected

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. It was a nice blend of sci-fi and fantasy. My only complaint was I had a little difficulty getting into it. Once I did I enjoyed it. This may not be everyone's favorite but it was worth giving a try.

Fantastic World in both Space and Fantasy!

This book was trippy! First, it starts out with a battle of AIs against Humans on a spaceship, then it leaves off with only one survivor on half of a ship and he has to survive on his own, then someone else shows up, and just when you think this book is all out full Sci-Fi, they land on a planet full of Medieval people and have to adapt into the society. Also, talking cats, or--well, the main character can talk to a Jamaican cat. And yes, it's as neat as it sounds. I really enjoyed this long book, though it ends in a big cliffhanger! However, I'm totally excited to check out the next one.
