In his Epistle, the Apostle Peter instructed us to give others good reason for the hope we have in Christ, but to do so with "gentleness and respect." Unfortunately, in the eyes of many non-Christians today, the church has done just the opposite. In unChristian, David Kinnaman, president of the Barna Group, has complied startling research among the unchurched and learned that Christians are too often known for the issues they stand against, rather than the hope which they stand for. According to the research, believers are seen as too judgmental, too political, and often hypocritical.

If you are a Pastor, lay person or youth leader you will not want to go without the details of this critical study. Uncover for yourself the latest research on the unchurched in Kinnaman's must-listen book.

This book deals withe the core problems that people have with Chrisitaninty. In a nutshell the problem that they have is Christians who are not acting with love toward this lost and dying world. There are tons of statistical data that support the points that David Kinnaman makes which goes far beyond him simply expressing his own opinions. The data gathered and interviews that he has done show what people are thinking and saying about Christianity. Weather their perceptions are true or not, this is the way that we are perceived by our world. To be able to reach someones heart, you need to understand their point of view. I found that I had some pretty innacurate assumtions about what people were thinking about Christ, Christianity, and Christians like myself. If you truly love people and want to reach them with the love and mercy of Christ you despeartely need this book, as much as they need you to read it.

I am so grateful this book was written. It holds a mirror up for us to see what others see. This was needed. This message could be discouraging if not delivered well, but this actually encouraged and stoked the original fire in my heart to be a reflection of Jesus. There were Pharisees in biblical times and we still have them today. I suppose that will never change, but this book wakes us up from a faith on autopilot and compels us to get back to the heart of God and be like Jesus.

Sobering & Compelling

I was brought up in the church and over time have found it to be hypocritical, self righteous and judgmental. They cherry pick Bible verses, interpret it to suit there point. They don’t practice the behavior I was taught as a child. Grace, tolerance and love. I find that I can practice that on my own without the church. The book points out the painful truth the church’s don’t want to hear. What the book does not address how evangelicals and born agains pray on each other by preaching prosperity and bleeding it members dry. I know members of my family who can’t feed there own but keep giving. This book was written in 2009, I’m sure if the survey was don’t today the results would be worst. I applaud the Christian author for taking on the challenge, asking hard questions and presenting a less then flattering results. I do find it interesting that though they speak of tolerance and understanding they see no other way the their way. There is always more then one path. Todays Christian’s and anything but Christian.

Spot on from an outsider’s perspective.
