Questo romanzo fu pubblicato nel 1869, e fu scritto da Hugo mentre era in esilio a Guernesy per ragioni politiche, tant'è che il titolo originario era "Per ordine del Re". Parti del romanzo descrivono l'opulenza e il parassitismo della nobiltà, in contrasto con la povertà in cui versa il popolo. Ma l'esempio di levatura morale offerto dalla povertà non lascia dubbi su chi siano quelli a cui si apriranno le porte del Cielo. Dal libro sono stati tratti vari film primo fra tutti il film muto di Pierre leni, del 1928, dalla cui colonna sonora è stata tratta la cornice musicale.
