Der alte Öhi lebt zurückgezogen und menschenscheu hoch oben in den Schweizer Bergen. Seine Hütte steht auf einer Alm, weit entfernt vom nächsten Ort, der das Dörfli genannt wird. Einsam ist es dort oben. Aber Heidi findet bald einen Freund. Es ist Peter, der Geißenbub.

Heidi lebt nun in Frankfurt im Hause des Fabrikanten Sesemann. Sie ist die Spielgefährtin der kranken Tochter Klara, und die beiden Mädchen verstehen sich gut. Aber Heidi ist trotzdem nicht glücklich dort. Zu groß ist ihr Heimweh nach den geliebten Schweizer Bergen, nach dem Großvater und dem Leben auf der Alm. Sie erzählt niemandem etwas von ihrem Heimweh. Doch es wird immer schwerer für sie zu ertragen. Heidi verliert ihre Fröhlichkeit, wird jeden Tag ein wenig blasser und kann fast nichts mehr hören. Und dann geschieht etwas Seltsames im Hause der Sesemanns.

Als Heidi von ihrer Tante Dete bei ihrem Großvater abgegeben wird, glaubt sie, niemals mehr glücklich zu werden. Ihr Großvater liebt sie nicht, Dete lässt sie alleine und der freche Peter scheint sie nur ärgern zu wollen. Alles scheint verloren. Dann aber besinnt sich die kleine Heidi auf ihre Stärken: Ihre immer fröhliche Art und die Hoffnung, alles wird einmal gut.
