Die Sklavin Eliza flieht mit ihrem Sohn Harry, der verkauft und damit von seiner Mutter getrennt werden sollte, nach Norden und trifft dort hilfsbereite Sklavengegner. Parallel dazu erleben wir den Leidensweg von Onkel Tom, der nach dem Verkauf an einen Sklavenhändler immer weiter in die amerikanischen Südstaaten vordringt und dabei das Elend der Sklaverei aus nächster Nähe und am eigenen Leib erfahren muss.

Eigentlich haben es Tom und seine Familie ja besser getroffen als viele andere Sklaven, werden sie doch von ihrem Herrn verhältnismäßig gut behandelt. Doch eines Tages wird Tom von seiner Familie getrennt und zusammen mit dem Sohn der Haussklavin an einen skrupellosen Sklavenhändler verkauft. Während es der Haussklavin und ihrem Sohn gelingt, in den sklavenfreien Norden zu fliehen, muss Tom auf dem Schiff weiter den Mississippi in den tiefen Süden hinabfahren.
