I wasn’t looking for a mate, but I’m keeping her now that I’ve found her.
My mate died, but somehow, I survived, and my body didn't get the message that I don't want to go into heat. My brother nursed me back to health, but now I've become a bargaining chip.

A walk in the woods to enjoy my last moments of freedom before being forced to mate a new alpha almost becomes the last thing I do. The only thing more terrifying than the bear trying to kill me is the monster who prevents it from doing so.

He's different enough I don't feel like I'm betraying my lost mate when he declares he's keeping me for himself, and there's a connection I can't deny.
Why wouldn't I let him claim me as his prize?

This is the third story in the Monsters in the Mountains series, and it can be listened to as a standalone.

The idea of the story is beautiful, but I feel like the story could have been become a lot more. I believe that as good as the story is, I believe if the author was to continue, it would make an amazing book. I still loved it. I love the narrator voice with the natural growl.

The beautiful beginning of a beautiful story

Book three in the series sets up the FMC a bit differently from the first two and introduces more familial ties and an FMC in her 30's who already had a mate and lost him. I liked the divergence from the common trope of young and just starting out. Many books in this genre tend to set FMCs to be either very young or as a "cougar" with the "young buck" FMC. As a later 30-something myself. It's always refreshing to have more representation in my age range. I thought this installment of the series had much of the same heat as the others and the variation helps keep the story fresh. I'm looking forward to listening to the next one. The narrator did a great job.

I loved this series when I first started reading them years ago (original ebook review below), and excited the books are being made into audiobooks. This was a very short listen at less than an hour, and I really like that it featured an older omega- as well as an older alpha. Daniel Buttrey is a new-to-me narrator and I loved his work bringing this story to life. I loved his tone of voice and inflections. I'd just listened to Monster's Obsession before this, and while I enjoyed Sacha Husband's narration, I really loved Daniel's. I look forward to listening to more audiobooks he's narrated.

Original ebook review 12/4/23-

“Never run from a predator, little rabbit. It makes you prey.”

I'm always so excited to get a new book in this series. I've loved them from the start and they are always fun, quick reads. I liked that Nala was an older, widowed omega. She should have died when her alpha did, but her brother took care of her and she survived. She longed for a fresh start- a new life. And it came unexpectedly when Av'dag saved her from a bear. I only didn't like that there was no resolution with her brother. It's assumed her arranged mating would be canceled since she left, but I kind of like the final face-to-face drama. 4 stars.

Grief left her broken, but he awakened instincts and primal desires.

Nala thought she understood loss until her first mate was gone, leaving her vulnerable and aching. Alone in the forest and caught between grief and the pull of her body, she faces a threat she cannot outrun. Every step draws her closer to danger and desire, her instincts telling her she is prey, but not for long.

When Av'dag appears, a predator unlike any she's known, everything shifts. He saves her from certain death, but claiming her goes beyond protection. His dominance is undeniable, and his patience tests her hesitations, pushing her toward a bond as consuming as it is awakening.

As Nala navigates fear, attraction, and trust, she discovers that surrendering is not weakness. With every touch, growl, and whispered command, she learns that love can be dark, consuming, and transformative. Together, they find power, desire, and connection in a world where instinct drives hearts and bodies toward a second chance.

Nala grows from a grieving and hesitant omega into a woman who embraces her instincts and desires. Av'dag evolves from a solitary, dominant alpha into a patient, emotionally attuned, and protective mate. Their bond shifts from fear and tension to a connected, passionate partnership.

A dark, ultra-steamy monster romance about grief, survival, and desire, where a woman learns to trust and bond with a new alpha, reclaiming her instincts and embracing a consuming connection that transforms fear and loss, into intimacy and fulfillment.

The Elevator Pitch: An omega haunted by loss finds herself caught between instinct and survival when a powerful, otherworldly alpha predator claims her. His dominance challenges her fears while awakening desires she thought were buried forever. As trust builds in the shadow of danger, they forge a bond that is as consuming as it is transformative.

Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥 Ultra-Steamy / Erotic Romance

Audio: Narrator Daniel Buttrey's performance brings Nala's vulnerability and Av'dag's dominance to life with clarity and depth. He navigates ultra-steamy, intimate moments with confidence, making every exchange feel charged and precise. Each character is distinct, and the listening experience is dark and immersive. ‍

I like that he saves her from the Bear and she chooses to go with him after some persuasion. She's was trying to escape anyway. This is her second chance at a Mate.

Monstrous second chance.
