John is a retired professor of interpersonal communication with over 32 years of teaching experience at the University of Washington. He also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque, bringing decades of leadership and academic expertise to his work. He is the author of Dismantling Racism One on One: Uniqueness, Narrative, Equity (2023), a thought-provoking book that offers a practical and deeply human approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Rather than focusing solely on systems, John explores how interpersonal communication, personal narratives, and one-on-one interactions can help dismantle racism and build authentic understanding. His earlier book, Personal Communicating and Racial Equity, introduces a step-by-step framework for developing anti-stereotyping relationships, providing readers with actionable tools to improve communication across differences and foster inclusive, equitable connections. In U&Me: Communicating in Moments That Matter, John highlights the importance of meaningful communication in everyday life, offering practical skills for building stronger relationships, improving emotional intelligence, and navigating important conversations with confidence. John also served as editor of multiple editions of Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication and coauthored Together: Communicating Interpersonally, both widely used resources in the field of communication studies. Through his work, John focuses on interpersonal communication, racial equity, diversity and inclusion, relationship building, and effective human connection, helping readers develop the skills needed to communicate across differences in today’s complex world. He lives in Iowa with his wife, Becky, and enjoys reading, cooking, and watersports.
