From award-winning New York Times best-selling author Betina Krahn comes a beguiling new romance brimming with her signature wit, timeless sensuality, and thrilling romance - as desire proves to be a great equalizer.

Daisy Bumgarten isn't thrilled to be trying to catch a duke's attention while dressed like a flowerpot caught in a swarm of butterflies. But, after all, when in Rome (or, in this case, London society)...

Since her decidedly disastrous debut among New York's privileged set, the sassy Nevada spitfire's last chance to "marry well" lies across the pond, here in England. If she must restrain her free spirit, not to mention her rib cage, so be it. She knows she owes it to her three younger sisters to succeed. Now, under a countess's tutelage, Daisy appears the perfect duchess-in-training.

Until notorious ladies' man Lord Ashton Graham, a distraction of the most dangerous kind, glimpses her mischievous smile and feisty nature - and attempts to unmask her motives. Daisy has encountered snakes on the range, but one dressed to the nines in an English drawing room is positively unnerving - and maddeningly seductive. When a veiled plot emerges to show up Daisy as unworthy of the aristocracy, will Ashton be her worst detractor? Or the nobleman she needs most of all?

This romance is more conventional than Betina Krahn’s older books, but it is still a rollicking read. Krahn has a distinctive, retro style of writing - sly, witty, satirical, and choreographed like a ballet - that should leave you on the ropes if a decent number of her punches land. The audiobook format could have done a lot to enhance that style of storytelling. This performance kills it dead. I’ve definitely had more than my fair share of audiobooks where I listen for less than a minute and say, “Nope, can’t do this.” I did make it all the way through this one, so I want to give the performer that much credit. I think the biggest problem is that this is a high-difficulty book, with a ton of opportunities for a practiced reader to show off, and it received a very basic performance. That said, I really do wish that they would do the audiobook over - not because it’s impossibly bad, but because of all the missed opportunities to make it great.

I can’t stand romance novels where one or both of the characters repeats a mistake over and over. In this case the heroine ruins her reputation so badly as a teen that she changes her entire future to make amends for it only to get to the almost point of success only to repeat it. What grown adult would knowingly take a note left by an unseen person and believe nothing nefarious is involved. Waiting just until daylight would have been the smart decision not go out to an inn in the middle of the night and expect her reputation remain intact. Much easier ways to get from one place to the next in a book.

Not bad but

Listen to the snippet!!!! I mean it!

I loved the story, I didn’t mind the narrator after a while, but she took some serious patience to get used to, then it was a matter of tolerating it. It didn’t really hurt it so much but it definitely made it longer!

Heat Factor.... mostly some serious steam with a singular wedding might.

Creditworthy? That’s up to you, it was for me.

5 star story with oddly 2.5 star narrator!

narrator could not pull off American accents and sometimes her voice for the heroine changed! Story was ok. not the best I've ever read by the author. also includes an error near the end where all the CDs are named by the narrator.

The story started out OK, but it went on and on and on and on. Just got boring.

Too long to support story line
