Eighteen-year-old James Douglas can only watch, helpless, as the Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace is hanged, drawn, and quartered. Even under the heel of a brutal English conqueror, James' blood-drenched homeland may still have one hope for freedom, the rightful king of the Scots, Robert the Bruce. James swears fealty to the man he believes can lead the fight against English tyranny.

The Bruce is soon a fugitive, king in name and nothing more. Scotland is occupied, the Scottish resistance crushed. The woman James loves is captured and imprisoned. Yet James believes their cause is not lost. With driving determination, he blazes a path in blood and violence, in cunning and ruthlessness as he wages a guerrilla war to restore Scotland's freedom. James knows he risks sharing Wallace's fate, but what he truly fears is that he has become as merciless as the conqueror he fights.

I just can’t get enough Medieval Historical Fiction! And this trilogy delivered. I really love how some authors will choose to write about characters who are in the background during Historical Events. Although it’s tough to say James Douglas was in the background during The Scottish Wars of independence, but kinda not the main character, just off in the periphery! This book has it all brutal Medieval Warfare, lost love, Kings and Queens, righteous indignation, w/the men at the lowest of the low, freezing and starving while on their bellies in the mud and guerrilla warfare! AND surviving w/the biggest victims of Medieval Warfare…. The Small Folk. LOVE those clever Scotsman! I can’t recommend this book enough.
Love this trilogy and can’t recommend it enough.
Gary Furlong does a great job narrating w/his plethora of accents he can perform. And sorry Gary… but you do a great woman as well😆🤣😂
