When mystery bookstore owner Annie Laurance is invited to teach "The Three Great Ladies of the Mystery" class at Chastain Community College, the sometime sleuth discovers that all is not strictly academic in Chastain's hallowed halls of learning. And when a shocking scandal in the school newspaper erupts in a suicide and two violent deaths, Professor Laurance enlists the talents of her new hubby, private eye Max Darling, and dons her thinking cap to probe intrigue and vengeance among Chastain's faculty.

A Dangerous Thing

Max and Annie, with dubious help from three of their own great ladies of the mystery -- Annie's pixilated mother-in-law, a batty local dowager, and a Christie crime fanatic -- learn that just about everyone at the school had means, motive, and access to the murder weapons. From the secretly boozing professor of advertising to the muscle-bound campus cad who barters passing grades for a little extracurricular activity, anyone on the faculty is a possible killer -- waiting to strike again!

Critic reviews

"Hart has a light touch with her characters, a fresh heroine in Annie, and a delightfully different setting!"

This one is typical of many in the series, but I particularly enjoyed it. I like that it explicitly touches the bases for the elements of a classical mystery. Annie teaches a class on the 3 grand dames of the golden age of mystery, and receives help from the 3 grand dames of the local counties.

One of the best in the series

One of the earlier books in the series; a fun read - I always like to try to solve the watercolor painting contest.

The author’s hatred and meanness toward “fat women” appears in every book. It’s so shocking there must be a back story. It’s pretty jarring.

What’s with the author’s weird obsession with obesity?

Cozy one . Relax, just lay back and enjoy. Lay in the sun and listen to these books.

It seems to have been a theme in many of the books I read and made it hard to read since it felt like I was being dumbed down. At least this one was less repetitive so I was less disgusted but I do not like feeling talked down to. I love the series so I believe this problem likely was the fault of Press and politics at the time. It didn't seem to infect her other books in series thank god. what saved the book was the interaction between Henerietta Brawley, Dora Brevard and Max's Mother. I'd say it's passible on content but acceptable on humor.

It was ok, a bit political
