In their pattern of abuse, they all have certain consistent traits – the idealization, devaluation, and discard of their romantic partners. However, in terms of operation, there are different types of narcissists and one of such is the “Covert narcissist.”
The covert narcissist is one of the toughest to spot because he operates from under the radar and is known to react in a passive-aggressive manner.
Covert narcissists create chaos in other people’s lives and thrive from the resulting pain and anguish. One of their favorite pastimes is to set their victims up for failure and also dish out some sort of punishment when they ultimately fail. Sometimes, they intentionally make promises they know they won’t keep, and when their victims react, they make it look like they’re being victimized. Some even deny ever making any promise, resorting to gaslighting techniques to make their victims believe that they’re losing their minds. If left unchecked, this can lead to dangerous consequences for the victim.
Covert narcissists are conflicted, and it stems from the fact that they want to be worshipped. They are highly insecure but the only thing they think about is themselves. By the way, it is extremely easy for them to trap their victims because they have mastered the art of using sob stories to suck in them in. Covert narcissists have an eye for their potential victims – meaning they know how to easily detect people with empathy and conscience.
Covert narcissists have everything but love for others, and anything that challenges their sense of superiority is seen as a personal attack. They look down on everybody else and when they encounter people that they feel are better than them, they feel threatened and resort to talk-downs and insults. They always have an excuse for everything and are fond of rooting for the underdog because it makes them look better in public.
Covert narcissists lack any sense of empathy or affection, however, they tend to watch TV a lot, because they’re trying to copy behaviors they see, e.g. empathy, love, and show of affection. It is very hard for victims to escape from the clutches of their covert abusers because they drain them physically, mentally and psychologically.
Covert narcissists are like the most dangerous types of abusers because they use gaslighting and other forms of abuse methods to weaken their victims psychologically and mentally. Most times, it is long after the narcissist has dumped the victim and moved on, that the victim finally gets to realize that they’ve been grossly abused.
The good thing about this life is that there is always hope, and as a victim, once you realize this, it is important to seek help from the appropriate quarters, in other to build your life all over again.
