An engineer finds himself in an alternate reality, Cornwall, in the year 715 A.D. He awakens in the body of a young Baron.

A retired Lieutenant General, former head of the Army Corp of Engineers, lies dying at the age of ninety-two. Leading a full life, he is a decorated veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

After a long illness, he lies dying. His last thought is, "What a waste of such wonderful knowledge."

As he fades to black, the fun begins. He is to build a modern civilization without being burned as a witch!

Now James faces King Ine of Western Wessex, its Saxons against the Britons. More complications face his county of Cornwall as its wealth comes to the notice of more Kingdoms.

it's a really good story. The whole series is but I can't tell if it's the way it's written that makes the reader sound like a robot or did they just get an AI voice to read this?

I skipped book 2 as it wasn't on sale and jumped right into book 3. I can report the break neck pace of modern innovation introduction continues with the medieval society surprisingly adopting all the changes almost immediately and seemingly changing their entire mindset to a more modern thought process almost overnight. It's fun to hear about the innovations and how they impact society, but it also feels like a ton of story is being skipped by the author. For example, a neighboring and powerful king is building up to war and the entire build up and full war resolution is achieved in under 2 chapters. Wow - way to fast with so much lost story! However, this is a fun (if short) listen if you want something light.

my one gripe with his research is that syphilis is thought to have originated in America, this is the 8th century England, there would be no syphilis, there might be other VD's but not syphilis, which is distinctive in its symptoms.

one gripe
