Maximillian has been given the chance to avenge his family's death: the Duke of Odoevsky has conspired in a plot against the emperor, and if Max plays his cards right, he'll be able to destroy the man who read out his family's execution order with such ecstasy. But one small mistake topples his plans, and now thousands of people caught in the clutches of terrible monsters are counting on him to save them. What choice must he make? Revenge or salvation?

New layers revealed in every book. Great story. Will definitely pick up the next book.

Honest critique from a guy with almost 700 titles in his audible.

Occasionally the path feels a little unclear. With what I would consider a shorter listening time for each book it almost feels like a monster of the week type of situations sometimes. But……

The story is connecting and flowing. And I like the adaptability of Max. He is a good representation of what people want a “grey Jedi” to be in my opinion. Overall he has a lightside moral compass but he doesn’t buy into the system totally, he stays skeptical, and he’s willing to be a little dark to get the job the done. Or very dark if necessary. On top of that, he isn’t just crazy overpowered, but still better than most, and can figure out how to come out on top.

I’m really enjoying this story

Each book in this series is a joy to read. Each book builds up the world Max lives in. We see his roll change a lot in a short period of time. Great transition and story.

We learn a lot about Dark one society

My only problem with this series is that the books are too short. They can't translate the books fast enough!

1 of the best lit series

Lots of factions inside factions. Kinda makes me wonder who is who? Mc might be strong but certainly not the biggest fish in the pond.

Politics, factions and fighting.
