Wow really love this one. It's so well written. Although I did not like the voice of the male narrator, it's still good.

Another thrilling chapter in the Naga Brides series

This book, unlike the others took place entirely on the spaceship. We got a look at life up there and have a better idea of what is going on in the world at large. It is always good to see the familiar faces that comes at the end. A great addition to the series.

The heroine: Vivian - she works in medical technology and AI. Her boss, Ursula is a sociopath who scares everyone but Vivian’s father. She lives and works aboard a colony ship called the Dreadnought, and a Naga male from Earth has been captured and brought aboard the ship to Ursula’s lab. Vivian’s father is the supreme commander of the dreadnought and was a harsh disciplinarian. The alien’s presence has been classified; Vivian is fascinated by the alien from the start.

The Hero: Syasku - he went to sleep on the forests of Earth and woke in a cage on a spaceship. The humans know him to be easily provoked, and he refuses to cooperate with the scientists and technicians. Though they are able to use technology and put him to sleep in order to get samples of his blood and tissue. He hates Ursula and wants to kill her, actually all of them.

The Story: Studying the Naga breaks laws, but the decision was made to study him in order to try to unlock the Lurker Technology the humans need in order to fight the Kets. Vivian has been forced into a situation she doesn’t like. What they are doing is forbidden under the sovereign’s universal commandments and even her father isn’t above those laws. Vivian knows that what they are doing is unethical. Though she ways it agains the millions that will die at the hands of the Kets.

I liked the previous books in this series quite a bit, though this one was a pretty big departure from the other books, that all took place on future Earth where the Naga are the dominant species. I tend to read a lot of stories where the main characters are treated poorly, and I hate them, but love them. I like it when the characters overcome their adversary and win out in the end, but I hate the fact that sentient beings are treated as lab rats, and mistreated or tortured. I knew this one was going to be like that from the start. Vivian wanted to have morals and fight for what is right, but she is too scared.

There was a lot of action in this one and it was super steamy, like the rest of this series. I have said it before, but I don’t like how these stories seem to focus on the Hero’s “seed”. It gets everywhere and he is always dripping it and it really bothers me, because it just isn’t sexy, romantic or anything like that. It is just icky to me. I did like the story quite a bit though, especially when they escape captivity, since they are still on the colony ship which is so big it carries over a million people.

The ethical dilemma at the heart of the story sounds intense, especially with Vivian struggling between morality and necessity. It makes for such a compelling conflict when a character knows something is wrong but feels powerless against forces larger than themselves. The shift from future Earth to a colony ship is a pretty big departure, and I can see how that change in setting adds layers to the story—especially when it comes to the secrecy surrounding Syasku.

This audiobook was told in multiple perspectives, done in dual narration and was narrated by John Masterson and Willa James. John Masterson has a super deep voice which I really like for the Naga males, and he speaks in a slow, measured way that just makes them sound more authentic for some reason. This was my first time listening to Willa James and she has a great voice. I really enjoyed the narration.

Cottonmouth by Naomi Lucas is the sixth book of The Naga Brides Series. I’ve been thoroughly entertained in reading the series. I would recommend that you read them in order. Just beware that there’s a lot of explicit sexual descriptions in the books. If you can handle that and you enjoy alien sci-fi, romance stories, then I believe you will enjoy this series thoroughly.
