A one-way stage ticket to the frontier leaves a young woman penniless and alone in Long Grass, Wyoming. With no other hope than to survive another day, she takes up the only profession open to her. Years later she encounters a one-of-a-kind cowboy she can love, and her first taste of pleasure—and happiness.

Cowboys, however, are born to wander, and their kisses are as brief as the lives of young women without family or means. Accepting that her days will be numbered too few, Darlin' escapes into her scribblings where her dreams of freedom can soar over the limitless prairie. When she recognizes her own truth and a chance for love in the longing gaze of a townswoman, will she finally find kisses she can trust?

Two determined women in a hostile world save themselves—and each other—in a lyric, sensual love story as only Karin Kallmaker can tell.

I very much like this realistic story about strong women under harsh circumstances.
It makes history likable and relatable.

Strong women

The only drawback to this story was that it was short. Otherwise, it was an excellent depiction of the harsh realities of life in the west back then. Darling/Eve’s life and Violet’s were equally harsh because they were both trapped because of the lives they led. Ironically, Connor’s life was the free one because she would not settle down.

Eve and Violet had a quiet and sweet relationship at the end were they finally found the freedom to love.

This was an excellently written story by Karin Kallmaker. That in and of itself was a joy! The narrator did an excellent job of portraying this strong and insightful story. Well done!

Excellent Story!

Darling is living a life no one can want but abandoned by family leaves little choices. Violet for all her upstanding life is no less in prison. This is a hard story but one full of redemptive love. Ann Shanks Etter gives voice to women on the edge that life is hard at best. The great gift was to hear Karin share at the end of this reading. it is the characters who find a way to continue in hope that draws me to the story. I loved it and would be in my re-listen pile.

A true look at the life for women in the old west

Karin Kallmaker’s writing is in an elite league, in my opinion. She is such a visual and emotional writer. I can feel the characters’ emotions and see them clearly in my minds eye. What a talent! Reading/Listening to her books is like watching movies. I haven’t found one yet that I haven’t fallen in love with and gone back to. I could gush all day about Ms Kallmaker…
This narrator is new to me. I’m picky about the narration in audio books. Poor narration will kill the story for me. Anna Shanks Etter did a fantastic job with this story. I will not hesitate to look for her in future.

Karin Kallmaker never ceases to amaze me with the insight and heart she weaves into her writing. This one is no exception. The story of women who rescue themselves and each other is both timeless and germane to the times we live in now.

A True Classic
