An obsessive killer, a witness with secrets, and a deputy US marshal with her own dark demons collide in this gripping mystery from the bestselling author of Cold Dark Places.

Dylan was only a child when he and his friend stumbled onto a crime scene deep in the woods. His friend was killed that night. And Bruce Forrester, the man who had chased the boys in the woods, disappeared. But he’s never stopped looking for the only living witness. Ever since, Dylan and his family have been on the run.

Deputy US Marshal Cady Maddix knows what it’s like to be haunted by a traumatizing childhood. She’s determined to track Forrester down and give Dylan the peace of mind he deserves. Only the more Cady delves into the case, the more pieces of a strange puzzle emerge - about Forrester, Dylan, and Cady’s own inescapable demons.

As Cady grows closer to separating the truth from the lies, someone is determined to stop her at all costs. And the consequences of putting the past to rest could prove deadly.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this story. The story arc has you feeling sorry for the Dylan and hoping the Marshal's can save him from basically everyone. The narrator does a good job.

Good story

Only the uneducated and undesirable seem to have southern accents . The southern accents and inflections of the characters are not characteristic of this region . I am a native of Haywood County and was disappointed in the inaccuracy.

Appalachian accent

Ok, so that was a bit misleading...there isn’t a clown, not a real one anyway! This thriller is well written! The main characters are shown as real people with imperfect families and small nuances, like a clown doggie toy! The story doesn’t ramble and keeps you engaged. I highly recommend this series.

Great thriller...a US Marshall, a sheriff & a clown...

Good $5 sale to hear narrator who does a good male voice. Don’t miss Julie Garwood, Mercy which made me a fan of this reader.
Not sure if l am fan of this author yet. Lots of thugs to follow in the beginning and l lost interest. Of course the red herrings clues were good . When book 3 comes out and if same narrator, reviews from fan Eg Wayne will indicate whether to buy.
