Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones—the most elusive of all faeries—lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart.

This was really just a cool fantasy. For the most part I would classify this as cozy fantasy though it can be rather dark at times. It's very slow paced and very descriptive; almost slice of life in some chapters. You're really just following Emily Wilde researching fairies in the wintery landscapes of a small Nordic town. I loved all of the descriptions of all the landscape, the villagers, and all of the different fae. At times this read like an old Germanic fairy tale and I really enjoyed that aspect of it. I don't really have a ton to say about this book. I just simply enjoyed it.

So Whimsical and Cool

This was just a good solid story. Easy to listen to and not filled with smut. You can tell a good story when it doesn’t need to be filled with all of that stuff to be entertaining.

Clean and clever

The story was lovely, I did have to slow it down so I could process it all as it’s read a little quickly for my own personal enjoyment.
Witty and imaginative, my first fairie novel as an adult and I enjoyed it very much. Going to listen to it again 🖤

This book was simply enchanting. Loved the characters, the development of the world and the characters within. The subtle romance that is pure and refreshing, leaving room for the more complex story to unfold. I cannot wait for book two!!
