The magical, stunning conclusion to the internationally acclaimed Half Bad trilogy, the inspiration for the Netflix series The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself

"An enthralling fantasy in the Harry Potter tradition."—Time magazine on Half Bad

The Alliance is losing. Their most critical weapon, seventeen-year-old witch Nathan Brynn, has killed fifty-two people, and yet he's no closer to ending the tyrannical, abusive rule of the Council of Witches in England. Nor is Nathan any closer to his personal goal: getting revenge on Annalise, the girl he once loved, before she committed an unthinkable crime. There is an amulet, protected by the extremely powerful witch Ledger, which could be the tool Nathan needs to save himself and the Alliance. But the amulet is not so easily acquired. And lately Nathan has started to suffer from visions: a vision of a golden moment when he dies, and of an endless line of Hunters, impossible to overcome. Gabriel, his closest companion, encourages Nathan to run away with him, to start a peaceful life together. But even Gabriel's love may not be enough to save Nathan from this war, or from the person he has become.

Set in modern-day Europe, the final book in the Half Bad trilogy is more than a story about witches. It’s a heart-poundingly visceral look at survival and exploitation, the nature of good and evil, and the risks we take for love.

It's not the end I wanted, but it's a real and gritty and honest end. It really reminds me of interacting with those with severe ptsd. It's a very real end.

I was laughing, and sobbing, and sobbing, and sobbing. I can't say I'm in favour of the ending but it was a great one that left me—you guessed it—sobbing.

What an ending to an amazing series!

Honestly I thought that I wouldn't be able to get through the first part of this book. There are interesting and challenging decisions made for the main characters that were at time frustrating and unenjoyable. However, it seems to have just been the "dark night of the soul" part of the story and I really enjoyed the rest of the book. The relationship between the main characters finally develops and is written so well. I usually think endings are hard for writers but this book has the, to me, one of the best and well written endings of any book I have ever read/listened to. Up until the second half of this book, which is the third and last in this series, I thought the Netflix show seemed better. But now I wonder how the show is ever going to capture the emotion and feeling of this book.

Best of the series

My barely coherent review of the book is on Goodreads. This is just for the audiobook.

Carl Prekopp brought this series to life for me and I loved the journey. I didn't immediately love the narration, but much of that was choices made in the style rather than the voice. The voice? Didn't really blow me away until his American accent for Ledger. That change perked my ears up so much I slowed it down from 2x speed to 1x to get the full effect and actually Googled the narrator to see if he had been an American doing a British accent all along. He's not. He's British and does a truly delicious American accent.

I listened to this mostly while working today, so I wasn't able to read along with my physical copy the way I usually do. That means that every beautiful, devastating, brutal moment was conveyed to me solely by the narration and that narration was flawless in this installment. I feel like the narrator and I both were so committed to the story by this point that it didn't take much to take my emotions all over the place until I was left in tears by an ending so beautifully written and read that I can't hate it despite it being far from an ending I would have wanted.

This audio and physical book are the best in the trilogy, but only because of how perfectly they cap it all off. While book 1 was a rather shaky 3 stars for me, the series as a whole is now a 5 just based on how good this conclusion was. I so recommend it in either or both versions, Absolutely fabulous work from all involved.

Devastating yet beautiful conclusion.

I came to the series after being hooked by the Netflix show. I hate that it was cancelled and I wanted more. While the writing is great and the narrator is amazing, I don't think I will ever be able to listen to this book again. I become too emotionally attached to handle endings like that. I am gutted. 💔

I am destroyed....
