In hockey and love, timing is everything....

Emmett "Coop" Cooper is the star captain of the Boston Bruins. But off the bench, he's hiding a secret that could jeopardize everything he's worked for. As a gay man and a virgin, he's chosen to live his life in the closet, afraid of how the hockey world might react. However, one night, while visiting family out of town, everything changes when he meets a guy at a bar with a captivating smile he can't ignore.

Ford Mahoney is a recent college graduate with a haunted past. After destroying his relationship with a fellow student, he escapes from Boston after graduation to mend his broken heart. A chance encounter with a famous hockey player sparks hope of a fresh start, but when Ford learns Coop is friends with his ex's new man, he keeps Coop in the dark, leaving the fate of their relationship on thin ice.

With secrets buried deep, the excitement of a steamy summer fling provides a welcome distraction. But once they're back home, Ford is forced to come clean, leaving him to wonder if he'll ever break free from the chains of his past. And with a broken heart, Coop questions if love is worth the pain.

But maybe it's true that time heals all wounds.

Hooking the Captain is book one in the Off the Bench Duet. Coop and Ford's story concludes in Retaking the Shot.

Sweet love story with a sad case of broken love and then a cliffhanger. Must get the second book to see if the love survives.

Broken love and a cliffhanger

I love the story line, don’t like how they have a couple chats/months of not having any interactions. I absolutely did not like the cliffhanger.

This was a very good story of two men with secrets trying to make a relationship work. Sadly, one secret breaks them apart. The last third of the book is done very well to set us up for book 2 in the duet. Looking forward to that on audio.

Narration was spectacular as always with Tim Paige and Liam DiCosimo 🤍

Good story

I had all the feels, even this second time around. Ford and Coop are precious and I love them. Their meeting and relationship was fun to see up until it all came tumbling down. Granted some choices were made with some less than ideal results but life is a journey and I can’t wait to see their story progress in the next book.

Ugh I love it

The audiobook was on sale, the narrators are some of my favorites, and I am in hockey mode, so I bought the book. I was entertained. I wanted to know what happened, but...

First person narration is tricky if you don't understand enough about the characters you are writing. Coop doesn't narrate his own story like an athlete. His dialogue is awkward. People just don't think like that! As an athlete myself, I rolled my eyes at the after game activities and food that Coop ate. Just no.

I had a bit of trouble buying into Ford's behavior. He obviously had issues, but the authors just didn't convince me that he would take the actions he did. His character needed a bit more development. His personality was a bit...flat.

The story did have some steamy scenes, great narration, and an interesting idea for a romance, If you like those things along with a large helping of tropes, you will enjoy the audiobook. This book ends in a bit of cliff hanger so I am going to listen to the next one.

Good narration. Decent story.
