The first thing I learned at vet school was to always expect the unexpected.

Well, I sure never saw Santiago Torres or his adorable Great Dane coming.

Santi is everything I’m not. Tall, confident, overbearing, and if I’m to believe his advances, he’s also very experienced in...well, you know what.

I always play safe, but it’s time to ditch the V-card. We couldn’t be more different, but that doesn’t matter, because this is just a one-time thing.

I’m not going to want more, right?

I’m not going to fall for him, right?

How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in the Chester Falls series and features an opposites attract story between a virgin and a player, a Great Dane with a tendency to rescue—read: kidnap—other people’s pets, and a small town like no other.

This is a so sweet addition to the Chester Falls series, as always spectacularly narrated by Nick Hudson. Nick always manages to get just the right voices for every character and infuses them with life and emotion. I loved Micah and Santiago, although Micah's insecurity from years of homophobia, bullying. and disregard, broke my heart. In spite of a successful vet practice and gaining Santi's love, even at the end, I wasn't sure he'd left it all behind completely. The ending with Santi was sweet and heart-warming.

Sweet addition to the series

The most heartwarming part of this book is what didn't happen. There was a chance that one vet's life wouldn't be as bad as he originally thought. It turns out that specific thing happens. But it's not a bad as he thought it would be.
The other vet, he's not super fit like so many other characters are in every book, ever (not just romance books). And he stressed over that, and his man doesn't try to change him, but loves that part of him.
So the author writes a great feel good book, but makes it relatable too. Bad things happen, but that doesn't mean the rest of your life sucks. You're not the ideal human specimen society says we should turn ourselves into, so what! Be healthy and happy. Everyone else will adjust.

I love this narrator! He's so happy sounding. OK, not sparkly Tom - cause honey that's just too exhausting. But he sounds very bayou, which is great for these feel good series. Thank you.

The "vet" featured in this hurt/comfort love story is actually two-fold - veterinarian Micah and military veteran Santiago. They forge a relationship - a first for Micah - while both face significant upheaval.

Micah is dealing with potential business ruin and lingering self-consciousness issues, while Santi is diagnosed with a serious degenerative eye condition that could lead to blindness. They have chemistry and are quite sweet together, and find support and strength in each other. And cheers for a lot of body-positivity and pet adorableness throughout this story too.

Narrator Nick Hudson has done a wonderful job voicing this series, and delivered another solid performance here. I especially liked his effectively conveying Micah's sensitivity and vulnerability. My only quibble is sometimes there was humor in his voice/tone that didn't quite jive with my interpretation of the mood at hand.

I've hopscotched through the Chester Falls series, which made tracking the plethora of secondary characters a challenge here. The books and coupled up characters are highly interconnected, so I'd recommend reading the books in order for maximum enjoyment. Santiago is facing a huge crossroads with the loss of his military career. Micah has a terrible self image and problems with his veterinary clinic. I like they are both vets. An easy to read story with two great characters.
