Killian
When I’m tossed into the trunk of a car, I realize that what little luck I have has finally run out—especially when I find that Tony, the man who’d abducted me, is planning on using me to get back at my father. My chances for escape look pretty bleak when I’m handcuffed to Tony’s bodyguard, an intimidating man named Shepherd who apparently loves tight shirts and seems to be amused by making my life miserable. Soon, though, I learn that Shepherd has a heart and a brain. And sometimes, those two things can be a bigger weapon than anything in a time like this. I just have to learn how to wield them.
After Shepherd gets me away from Tony’s men, I discover that he’s a survivor, a fighter, and the only person who seems willing to help me when it feels like the whole world is against me. At first, I’m not sure if I can trust the man, but the more we get to know each other, the more I realize that he’s funny and kind of sweet. He’s determined to protect me, but he doesn’t know all of my secrets. He doesn’t know that Tony isn’t the only one looking for me. But together, as we face betrayal and taking down the worst monster of all, we’re determined that we will be the lucky ones after all.
Just My Luck is a 101k word book featuring two broken souls who find peace in each other. While it does have a mixture of action, humor, and Alice’s trademark snarky banter, there are moments that might be considered darker to some listeners.

We meet MMC Killian on the day that he is plucked from the street and thrown into the trunk of a car. After that, we begin to alternate between the "present" timeline, and the past, going to various different time periods as things begin to unfold.
While I did enjoy the particular way the story was told - as an audio listener, timelines became a little bit confusing. The "past" time periods were not linear - for example: it would say "Age 19" then be back in the "now" without any distinction. Then, a couple of chapters later it would say, "Age 16". This is not a complaint per se, but those changes in timelines are a lot easier when you are reading and you can SEE exactly where you are in the story instead of trying to remember where you left off. Just an observation.
Anyway, it doesn't take long for Killian to realize that the guys who have him are playing for keeps and eventually things happen to make him try to escape. One of his captors - MMC Shepherd - ends up on the run with him (no spoilers) but in my opinion, this is where the story begins to shine.
Ms. Winters has an enormous talent of being able to inject humor into anything she writes. The banter in this book was off the charts. I have become quite a fan of anything she writes, and so far she has not let me down.
Both Killian and Shepherd are extremely likeable characters and watching them get to know each other, and watching the growth of each of their characters made this such a joy to listen to. Killian is hilarious and Sheperd has such a dry sense of humor that they play perfectly off of each other.
As much as I am glad for this being a stand alone (Why? Because it seems like every book nowadays is the beginning of a new series) this is one storyline that I would not mind seeing expanded - just based on how wonderful these characters were.
