Even if there be monsters, there is none so fierce as that which resides in man's own heart.

Enchanting Regency-era gothic romance intertwined with inspiration from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Travel writer Amelia Balfour's dream of touring Egypt is halted when she receives news of a revolutionary new surgery for her grotesquely disfigured brother. This could change everything, and it does...in the worst possible way.

Surgeon Graham Lambert has suspicions about the doctor he's gone into practice with, but he can't stop him from operating on Amelia's brother. Will he be too late to prevent the man's death? Or to reveal his true feelings for Amelia before she sails to Cairo?

This was so easy to listen to and had a lot of fun quirks about it, though some of the story at times was sad but right around the corner there was always many uplifting elements. It was definitely a bit darker, but somehow also very light, if that makes sense. I loved it. And I didn’t realize how wonderful the narrator was till I heard a preview for the next book in the series and I was like wow yikes. The narrator for this book was wonderful. Great character development, especially loved the character of Mary Shelley! Quite unique.

Excellent narration and story

This story kept me wondering and I could not guess where it would land. Narrator was very good.

Surprising

This was a very well written story, much different from all those that I have been listening to. Refreshing actually. Took place in England and with the English accents by the Narrator. It kept me interested right to the end with suspense and some romance. Do recommend listening by this author, Michelle Griep. Will look for another also with this Narrator, Nan McNamara.

This is my 4th and probably favorite book from Michelle Griep. This isn’t my usual taste (horror?) but the plot sounded very interesting and it was. It was well written with excellently vivid descriptions. Furthermore, the Christian elements in the story were believable and on point scripturally.

I’ve heard this narrator before in the other 3 books that I’ve read/listened to by Ms. Griep. She is easy to listen to and follow along with. She also does a great job in varying the accents and voices so it’s easy to tell who is speaking.

Great story and audiobook. I recommend it!

Outside my comfort zone

The first thing that bugged me was the narrator switching between an American accent and a British one for whenever anyone spoke. The voices all sounded the same and at times it wasn’t clear who was speaking.

Then the Christian themes started to come out and what a distracting detour that was. If I’d know I wouldn’t have gotten this book. Nothing against Christianity but if I want to ponder religion I don’t want it in a “gothic romance”. And man was there an inordinate amount of hemming and hawing about it.

Then we get to the characters and they were so…irritating! They’d make a speech and then do the opposite, then doubt themselves, then do something that makes no sense. It all felt like plot points, but not meaningfully. I was so mad! I can’t believe I made it to the end. Well I made it 94% and then I just couldn’t listen anymore.

I’m sorry, I’m sure this is for someone, but it isn’t for me.
