A romantic comedy about death, forgotten pasts, and unfinished business.

Vada Daughtry is a professional mourner. For a fee, she’ll cry at your funeral, whisper invented memories, and spin tales of heartbreak. It’s a job that keeps her moving—and keeps her past buried.

But when a wrong turn leads her to a roadside bar and a mojito-soaked night with bartender Dominic Dunne, something shifts. Then she vanishes, like she always does.

Nearly a year later, Vada shows up at a funeral… and realizes the deceased is Dominic’s mother.

Now he’s grieving, furious, and stunned to learn Vada’s been left a generous piece of his mother’s estate. He knows what she does for a living. He thinks it’s all a con. Vada wants to slip away quietly—again—but the late Annabelle Dunne has other plans: haunting Vada until she completes a list of posthumous demands, starting with renovating her crumbling seaside cottage.

Drawn back to the coastal town of Shellport, Vada and Dominic are forced to confront the truth—about the past, about each other, and about a ghost of a woman who isn’t done pulling strings.

Perfect for fans of enemies-to-lovers tension, slow burns, and ghost stories with bite.

Fabulous performance! Loved these two paired together!

This is a fabulously written book. The emotional depth, the plotting, and the dark humor was done so well.

Vada has a very unique career as a "Mourner for hire" she will meet with people who are facing death or people that want to plan well ahead to grant their last wishes in a way. She has been through some trauma in her young life and does not remember anything of her childhood due to that trauma. Returning to the town she grew up in until she was 8 for a client with a strange brand of requests brings her back to where everything started and went wrong.

Dominic is a very smart and capable man that is dealing with guilt after his fathers death and now his mothers illness. He is the local bar owner but at heart he wanted to be a doctor. When Vada blows into town he is smitten that is until he thinks that Vada took advantage of his mother's dying wishes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters and their story tug at your heart strings. I wanted to hug them at multiple points of this book. I was so pleased when they got to their HEA.

Dark humor at its best

I listened to the audio for this book which was narrated by Zachary Webber and Andi Eloise. I really enjoyed this book and the plot. This book did a great job showing how people grieve differently after losing someone.

I enjoyed the banter and comedic timing in this story since it was a heavier plot. The two MCs slow burn into admitting their feelings towards each other was so good. Would 100% recommend!!

I loved everything from the first few sentences. the story is funny, original, the characters were full and flawed and loving. I gushed with giddiness. It's my first book by this author and first narration with Andi Eloise. I've heard like 20+ with Zachary Webber (narrating as ZW or JM) and I have to say this is his best narration by far. the story allowed him to share such emotion more than I've heard. Andi and Zachary need to narrate everything together! 💓 This was an all around fun time. It was beautiful. It was sad. It felt like a coming of age book but the main characters were adults. I guess it's because I feel we don't truly come into our own until we've experienced a major life event. this was a fantastic read.
