Addison Harper is abruptly summoned to Milverton at the behest of an abrasive lawyer. He plans to be in and out, back to the city lickety-split. Instead, he finds himself charmed by the small town with its delightful and eccentric residents, not to mention the rather easy-on-the-eye Sergeant Jake Murphy.

Despite the rocky start, Addison admits he's had a pleasant day out. That is, until returning to find the prickly old lawyer on the floor, and very much dead. Worse, it looks like murder, and Addison's fingerprints are all over the crime scene.

Murder on Milverton Square is the first in a wonderful new cozy mystery series set in an enchanting small town nestled amongst stunning New Zealand scenery. The Milverton Mysteries features a chaotic cast of local busybodies, delicious baked treats, a demanding and disdainful ginger cat, a very slow-burn romance with a rather appealing policeman, and of course, murder . . .

Fun mystery mostly set in a small town in New Zealand. It is first in a new cozy series and is charming in the way that the locals all (well, most of them) seem to accept him although the reason he is there is to claim an inheritance from a great-uncle he had never had any contact with and planned to return to his busy life in the Big Smoke. The uncle's lawyer is a cantankerous old thing who winds up murdered in his office. Guess who found the body. Things move along fairly slowly as more supporting characters appear and are developed. Including the attractive police sergeant who repeatedly tries to discourage this unwilling amateur detective from getting further involved. Excellent read with hints at romance and lots of incidental humor.
Philip Battley is excellent in his narration and delineates the characters very well. Despite his not having and Aussie/Kiwi accent he is the perfect narrator for this new series.

I love cozy mysteries with a gay protagonist, so once I stumbled on this, I knew I had to give it a listen. I was not disappointed! I love all the characters and the world of Milverton the author has created here. I also just came back from a vacation in New Zealand, so I was extra excited to hear descriptions of the scenery, which were great. And of course you can't forget one of the stars of the story Keith, the cat. The author's characterization of Keith was hilarious and really added to the cozy mystery feel of the book. I do wish the author had more of a New Zealand accent, but I really can't complain--the narrator did a superb job distinguishing characters and giving life to the story. I will be getting every book in this series as soon as they come out--thank you!

Favorite series I've stumbled onto in a long time!

First in a series, with a GREAT (first time at least for me), narrator. There are (3) to date, audiobooks as well, with a fourth only a few months away.
Thoroughly enjoyed the characters, protagonist, love interest, townsfolk and cat (and I’m not even a fan of cats; dogs ALL the way for me).
I ripped through this quite quickly, even while 📖 3 - 4 other 📚, slowing down on them while wanting to get to the second one in this series… 👏👏👏👏👏‼️

Cozy Mystery, But With A 🏳️‍🌈 Budding Romance… 💞💞💞‼️

Just the cozy mystery to escape to from the USA right now (March 2026).
Good plot and local color. My favorite characters are Mabel the visitor center volunteer and Keith the cat. Excellent narrator though all the characters sound British rather than like Kiwis. That’s okay. Lovely accent and each character sounds distinct.
