She's a witch from another world. She's the cyborg monster sent to capture her. When they’re trapped in the dark, their shared enemy is the only thing more dangerous than their growing desire.

Xochitl’s world is one of marigolds and memory, where the veil between the living and the dead is as thin as copal smoke. But when a sacred Día de los Muertos ritual is hijacked by a hungry, alien power, she is ripped from her home and thrown into Cempasúchil—a cyberpunk nightmare of chrome pyramids, holographic saints, and a corporation that mines souls for data. In this city, her ancestral magic is a glitch in the system, an unreadable signature that makes her the city's most wanted anomaly.

Tasked with capturing her is Itzel, the Ahuizotl. MictlánCorp’s most feared enforcer, a woman remade into a living weapon of alloy and obedience, complete with a monstrous, prehensile tail. Her only mission is to secure the asset. Her only weakness is the brother whose life her brutal service protects. For Itzel, the Anomaly is just another target in a city that has stripped her of everything but her loyalty.

But when a botched capture leaves them buried alive in the city’s collapsing underbelly, the hunter and the hunted are forced into a fragile truce to survive. In the suffocating darkness, surrounded by ghosts of the past and the hum of a dying city, their shared animosity ignites into an unexpected, dangerous spark. As they fight their way to the heart of the corrupt god-machine that runs Cempasúchil, they must decide if they can trust each other with their lives—and their hearts.

Can a woman of faith find the soul in a machine? Can a monster programmed for loyalty choose a future she was never meant to have?

Perfect for fans of Gideon the Ninth and This is How You Lose the Time War, Our Souls Electric is a dark and thrilling sapphic romance that weaves together the grit of cyberpunk, the wonder of portal fantasy, and the vibrant tapestry of Mesoamerican myth. It’s an enemies-to-lovers story about two women fighting for the soul of a city—and their own.

This is a standalone novel featuring forced proximity, hurt/comfort, magic vs. technology, and a hard-won HEA.

I think this is a really good book, love the concept and story line, but it is maybe a little repetitive with some of the details. Overall though my only real complaint is the virtual voice. I listened to this because it was free, it would not be worth paying for this narration otherwise but it would be worth paying for if they got a real person to do it. The regular mispronounced words and complete lack of tone or story telling ability really makes it hard to stay immersed in the book. Not to mention that given the message and themes of this story it frankly feels kinda disrespectful to the authors intentions that this was given a robot AI narrator when its about stopping technology from taking everything meaningful from real people.

Good story but deserves a real narrator
