The ongoing war between humanity and the Ulat is a battle of attrition that humanity is unfortunately losing. However, humans have the advantage of trans-hyperdrive technology, which allows their climber fleet, under very narrow and strenuous conditions, to pass through space almost undetectable. Passage at Arms tells the intimate, detailed, and harrowing story of a climber crew and its captain during a critical juncture of the war. Cook combines speculative technology with a canny and realistic portrait of men at war and the stresses they face in combat. Passage at Arms is one of the classic novels of military science fiction.

I keep coming back to this story

The story is compelling, the characters are very flushed out and relatable, and Cook doesn’t bog you down with exposition or info dumps.
The narrator does an outstanding job, keeping character voices distinct and consistent, and he does wonderfully with the sometimes disjointed style Cook wrote this book in.
Where this particular Cook book (see what I did there?) suffers is the failure in post production. The editor utterly screwed up, not leaving enough time between abrupt cutoffs and new sections, as well as a few instances of incorporating multiple takes of the same lines.
Listen, if you go into this knowing it’s scuffed, it won’t piss you off as much; but even scuffed YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS BOOK.
Outstanding SciFi abused by poor audio editors
