Sheriff Lance Tallbear’s half-blood Apache heritage leaves him struggling to find his place in a world where neither white nor Indian wants or readily accepts him. He faces the world his shaman father turned away from and acknowledges the one his shaman grandfather prays he’ll return to.
Tallbear’s new case uncovers a mysterious plane wreck discovered in the Superstition Mountains that turns out to stir both his life decisions and ultimate direction. Along with his troubled FBI partner, Brad Hanley, they face a myriad of obstacles in their journey to the truth.
The skeletons at the site hold the clues to not only who the killers were but also why the people died. Tallbear quickly find the crash site hides a deadly secret that reaches out of the distant past to threaten the lives of all who seek it. He will need to use all his skills and experience to discover the answers and stay alive.

It's also the first time for the narrator for me. Randy McCarten has a smooth voice and an amazing talent for story telling. I BELIEVED he was each character he portrayed and he got me invested into their lives.
Between the author and the narrator, you cannot go wrong with this audiobook!

The narrator, Randy McCarten delivers a strong performance, further enhancing the story. His voices were strong and powerfully performed. He further spoke with clarity and smoothness that lulled the listener into a safe place only to be yanked out by his talented voice skills expressing the action in the story.
I found myself fully absorbed in the book until its end. It is provocative especially given the distrust of the government nowadays. I was completely riveted.
Intriguing

I went into this one completely blind. I honestly know nothing about the author or anything but the story sounded really interesting. It really took a lot of the work that I like from other authors and put its own spin on it. Tallbear was interesting and reminded me of a few of the characters in Trackers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. And then the case and the way that things were handled just had a very Andrew Mayne storytelling quality to it. The different agencies and the way that things were handled (and mishandled) were very reminiscent of each of Mayne’s different series.
I say this, not to discount Lauritzen’s work in any way – but to point out that those are both best-selling authors of amazing series – and I think that Tallbear is such an interesting character I’m definitely going to want to see and read more from him. What I didn’t expect from this one was what tied everything together – along with the timeline of the found people (I’m trying SO hard not to spoil anything). I didn’t expect it at all and it really added another notch to this already enjoyable book.
This isn’t my first review of a book performed by Randy McCarten and there’s a good reason for that. He’s a phenomenal narrator that always turns a good book into a better one. This book was no different. He absolutely nails the performance of this one and really makes this already good book even better.
Overall, this book really surprised me in the best ways possible. Lauritzen wrote a really well-paced book that I kept finding myself coming back to for more. It’s a story that jumped off of the page and one that I won’t forget for some time.
