A fallen nobleman. A growing evil. An Investigator running out of time.

The low taverns and backroom gambling dens of Dublin are a long fall for an English nobleman. It is in these environs, however, where the growling evil within Thomas Olocher feels most at home. Each night, his darkness grows as he continues his cascade down toward the ultimate evil.

Can Alderman James, ever seeking redemption for his own dark past, stop Olocher before it's too late?

If you like mystery/thrillers or historical fiction, then you'll enjoy Rise of the Dolocher. The story is fast-paced and captivating, and each chapter will leave you wanting one more.

I had already read the rest of the series, but I hadn’t picked up this book that shows how it all began. I’m so glad I finally did! It’s short, to the point, and incredibly engaging, a great way to start the series or a satisfying way to wrap it up. Honestly, you can't go wrong reading it first or last.

I listened to the audio version, and Vivienne Wright did a phenomenal job as the narrator. Her performance pulled me even deeper into the story and made the characters come alive.

“Rise of the Dolocher” sets the tone perfectly with a fallen nobleman, a chilling evil brewing in the shadows, and a relentless investigator trying to stop it all before time runs out. The gritty streets of Dublin, the eerie atmosphere, and the moral tension give it both a historical and a thriller edge that fans of either genre will appreciate.

The only reason it’s not five stars is that I wish it had been just a little longer, I didn’t want it to end so soon! Still, a fast-paced, suspenseful read that’ll have you saying “just one more chapter” all the way through.

The author got me fooled - I thought one person was the Dolocher, but I was wrong!!! To be completely honest, I found that the initial story (about the gambling) a bit boring. But things got interesting once in Dublin. I just wish the narrator would do the Dublin accent, though. But I can’t wait to listen to the second book!

Good prequel, but too fast

An easy listen, well thought out. Nicely read with insightful character development. Nice listening pleasure. I had previously read the Kindle version, so the audio was a nice rendition of the book. The narrating was okay. Worth putting on your reading/listening list.

This is the story of how a fallen nobleman becomes is serial killer in olden times. I loved everything about this. The characters were well developed, the gore level was about right, the killings and most of the motivations made perfect sense, and the prose flowed perfectly. The main character is made human instead of one dimensional and that takes an expert touch. This is a home run for me and I am glad to see what this author is capable of producing, since I have been less impressed with some of his other works. I definitely will be following this series.
