Thirty years ago, Harry Winslow's wife and children died in a tragic house fire while he was out of the country on a mission for Uncle Sam — or did they? Someone has left Harry an envelope containing photos of his wife and children some years after they were supposed to have died.

Freshly retired from his years as a Government Agent, Harry turns to Sam Prichard. Sam and Indie managed to track down his family, but the incredible story only gets wilder from there. An old friend of Harry's had staged the deaths of his family, while leading his wife to believe that Harry was the one who had died, and that the KGB was coming for her family. In desperation, she allowed him to take her out of the country and create new identities for herself and her children.

Now the truth is out, and Harry and his wife are reunited, but then his old friend is murdered and Harry is the only viable suspect. Will Sam be able to prove his innocence? It's a game of poker — and the chips are human lives.

This audiobook is a solid choice for casual listening, though it does have its ups and downs. While the story has enjoyable moments, I found it to be quite predictable at times. Without giving away any spoilers, some of the "big reveals" in the plot are obvious from the start. The enjoyment comes not from being surprised by these twists but from watching how the protagonist, Sam, pieces everything together with his careful detective work. It’s less about uncovering mysteries and more about appreciating the way he arrives at the conclusion.

One thing that bothered me, though, was how the author seemed to use Sam as a way to show off their own skills or personality traits. Sam is portrayed as a superman in certain ways, although for common attributes, which felt over-the-top and made him harder to relate to. It sometimes came across as the writer was trying to brag through their character, which took away from the story for me.

On the positive side, this audiobook is great for background listening — perfect for when you’re doing chores like cleaning or gardening and want something light to keep you company. It’s not the most exciting or memorable story you might encounter, but it’s enjoyable enough for what it is.

In summary, this audiobook has its flaws but still offers a decent listening experience. If you’re looking for something easygoing to pass the time, it’s worth a try.

Very disappointed in the unrealistic storylines. Pure fantasy and little research. Couldn't finish even 1 book

The narrator is a bit distracting when doing female voices, underwhelming and trite dialog does not help. The stories are interesting and suspenseful, but the characters could be a bit stronger especially females who tend on the annoying side. Indie is smart and creative, and I feel like this should be truer in the dialogs and situations. On occasion the reactions seem off for Sam, limiting confidence in his intelligence as well.

Excellent story writing, lacking a bit on dialog
