I love how the new scenes are often a big surprise. My brain goes tilt, in a good way, as I try to figure out what is happening, much like the character who also doesn't know what's going on. There are many wonderful characters along the way and while our main character goes through his progression and development, it isn't a main focus and doesn't become THE story like it does in so many books.
The emphasis is more on the main character experiencing his new existence and focusing on his main goal. The relationship things that happen and his own angst are peripheral to that which I like a lot. It makes this story more experiential than emotional. It works out very well for this tale.
The world in which the story takes place develops with the book and even though there is some complexity there, it is not overwhelming or confusing. Well, it is a bit confusing in a couple of areas, but I just went with it figuring it will become clear later in the story.
The book ends on a perfect note, with the adventures of this first book complete and the setup for the next book right there encouraging the reader to grab the next book to find out what happens to everyone!
Fantastic space opera!
