When his brother dies stepping out in front of a car, Detective Jack Laidlaw is determined to find out what really happened.

With corrosive wit, Laidlaw relates an emotional quest through Glasgow's underworld, and into the past. He discovers as much about himself as the loved brother he has lost in a search that leads to a shattering climax.

I liked this the best of the Laidlaw trilogy. The story lines seemed the easiest to follow. There are lots of characters in this, like the other two, but their stories are the most compelling. Some are criminals by choice while others are criminals by chance. Sorting them out is the book’s work.
The narrator does a wonderful job of animating the book. However, I wish I’d had the text from time to time, as much to note particularly poignant passages as well as to keep track of the characters.
